ERIA: Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia

On November 27th, I had the honor of presenting at the Research Institute Network (RIN) Meeting 2024 in Bangkok, a gathering of esteemed institutions like the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), the Australian National University (ANU), IDE-JETRO, and the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS). During the Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) session, I shared insights from our study at the ERIA Digital Innovation and Sustainable Economy Centre (E-DISC) on the evolution of ASEAN’s digital integration framework documents, including DEFA’s role in fostering regional digital economic growth, inclusivity, and resilience. The opportunity to exchange perspectives with researchers on DEFA’s potential to shape ASEAN’s digital future and other exciting topics was both stimulating and rewarding. At the G20 Brazil Leaders’ Summit, ERIA reaffirmed its commitment to disaster resilience and sustainable development by co-hosting a high-level forum with Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea) and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Rio de Janeiro. Under the theme ‘Innovative Strategies for Disaster Resilience,’ experts from Asia, Africa, and Latin America explored dynamic governance, equitable financing, and community-based solutions to address escalating climate challenges. Prof. Hidetoshi Nishimura and Dr Anbumozhi Venkatachalam from ERIA shared Asian perspectives on governance and justice, highlighting the importance of multilateralism and innovation in tackling global issues. The forum’s outcomes, reflected in the G20 Leaders’ Declaration (18–19 November 2024), emphasised social, economic, and environmental equity while championing dialogue and global collaboration.
