What a jam-packed itinerary we had for the 'Joining the Dots' Masterclass in Leeds/Bradford last week, thanks to British Embassy Dublin, Connected Places Catapult and West Yorkshire Combined Authority. The topic for this edition was "How do we build sustainable, integrated transport systems that propel growth?". Not an easy one to unravel! Through a combination of site visits, walking tours, presentations and panel discussions, local authorities and government agencies from across the UK and Ireland shared their challenges and successes. World class research is being carried out in this area, through centres such as the Institute of Transport Studies (University of Leeds) and Human Factors and Safety Group & Virtuocity @ITSLeeds where human engagement with traffic is analysed and the future of autonomous vehicles is being imagined. The event was supported by Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire and the local team Jane Green Thomas Lock Czarina Taylor played a blinder in putting the itinerary together. Worth a visit also to Bradford to learn more about their impressive programme for Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture next year. Great to meet new people and connect with familiar faces. The British Embassy in Dublin in partnership with West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the UK’s Connected Places Catapult was delighted to host our 14th Joining the Dots series in Leeds. Over three days, attendees from over 30 local authorities and private bodies explored “How do we build mass transit systems that propel growth”. Bringing together UK and Irish experts and stakeholders over three days we explored: •       How masterplans on integrated transport and mass transit can open up national and regional economies •       How transport solutions can impact economic growth and social mobility •       How sustainable transport that meets the net zero agenda can be created •       What future bus and rail networks will look like •       How the benefits of transport integration can be maximised Attendees enjoyed a visit to Bradford to learn about the transport initiatives being undertaken to bring about the city’s successful tenure of the UK City of Culture in 2025. ‘Joining the Dots’ is a programme that promotes economic development in UK and Irish regions through the sharing of best practices by local policy experts. No two weeks are the same for our Department for Business and Trade (DBT) team. Last week was no exception and saw the team out on the road attending different events and connecting with businesses from across Ireland and the UK, meeting companies and delivering webinars. This action-packed week saw the team: - Attend the InterTradeIreland and Department for Business and Trade Northern Ireland event in Newry on ‘Maximising your export potential through cross-border trade’ as part of International Trade Week where SMEs heard more about the supports offered by both organisations and how to get export ready. - Visit the Commercial Interiors UK Dublin Open, where the UK’s leading commercial furnishing suppliers presented the latest in high-end, innovative solutions designed for commercial interiors. This event was part of Irish Design Week by Design & Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI). - Attend the Dublin Chamber Scotland – Ireland Networking Workshop with Inverness Chamber of Commerce and Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce. At this event, valuable connections were made between Scottish and Irish businesses - exploring potential collaborations and sharing opportunities. - Delivering webinars as part of International Trade Week on ‘Rail Partnerships with Ireland: understand the DART+ procurement strategy’ in collaboration with DBT's UK Export Academy and Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail and ‘A World Tour of Europe’ outlining opportunities for UK businesses in Ireland. #tradeweek #uktrade

We're looking back at our British Embassy Dublin stand and pre-event reception at the hugely successful Wind Energy Ireland trade show earlier this month.   Over the two days it was very clear that partnership and collaboration will be at the centre of the renewable ambition for both the UK and Ireland as we both look towards our 2030 and 2050 climate goals. Hydrogen will play a key role in the UK's Clean Energy and Economic Growth missions. It can create new jobs in our industrial heartlands, delivering a just transition and achieving net zero. How? • Hydrogen can be used as fuel without emitting carbon at the point of use and can be transported and stored. • Hydrogen can support UK energy security and resilience in the power system. • Hydrogen can be used to decarbonise heavy industry and replace fossil fuels in UK manufacturing. • Hydrogen is the leading option to decarbonise heavy transport, including shipping and aviation.   UK and Ireland are working together to develop a hydrogen economy as part of our clean energy cooperation and British Embassy Dublin were in Cork for the third HydrogenIreland conference: 'Navigating Challenges and Seizing Opportunities'.   Enabling hydrogen policy collaboration across both islands and internationally was discussed by Jason Hannon from Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, Helena Quilty from Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Jimmy Graham from Department for the Economy NI and Brett Ryan from Hydrogen UK. Cork is rapidly developing a renewable energy cluster and we also visited ESB Aghada generation station, Bord Gáis Energy and Irving Oil Whitegate refinery to learn more about hydrogen's role in their clean energy transition plans. #H2IRL2024 #Hydrogen #netzero

2024 marks 200 years of the RNLI saving lives at sea across Ireland and the UK. To celebrate this milestone, British Ambassador Paul Johnston hosted an event with RNLI and Commissioners of Irish Lights to honour its lifesaving work and its wonderful volunteers, who are at the heart of their achievements each day. The RNLI is a great example of the uniqueness of the British-Irish relationship. It epitomises the breadth of our shared values and interests with a network of 238 lifeboat stations around the UK and Ireland whose teams are ready to save lives at sea, 24-hours, 365 days a year. #RNLI200
