Many migrant and refugee families living in Ireland go hungry at this time of year. For some, the hot school meal is the only hot meal their child will have in the day. During school breaks, many families struggle to feed their children and parents go hungry, so their children don’t have to. Help us provide the basics for migrant and refugee families at risk of poverty and hunger. Donate at www.doras.org/hardshipfund

Meet some of Doras’ current students from our free English classes, along with their teacher, Hadjer. One of the students told us that during a job interview, he was asked if he could write addresses in English. He said that thanks to our English lessons, he was able to do so and was offered the job.🎉 Another student has now enrolled in ETB courses in English and mentioned that our course was a great help during the classes. Well done to all students who have been working so hard! Studying and working in a language that isn't your native tongue is a barrier most English-speakers take for granted but it's something people from migrant backgrounds face every day. #englishclasses #lifeinireland #migrantworkers

A year ago, a group of staff at Mary Immaculate College, Ireland got together to welcome a Syrian family escaping war to settle in Limerick through Community Sponsorship. Here they tell us their experience: “We got together 18 amazing people with a range of skills as parents and community members and decided to welcome a refugee family. We raised money through quizzes, raffles, donations and business match-funding to support the family for the first 2 years. When we put our minds to it, we surprised ourselves and managed to raise €30,000 in no time. We all undertook training provided by Doras. We were shocked by the scale of the challenges facing migrants globally and we knew we wanted to do something about it. The family arrived in June 2023. They were from Syria and had fled the war there, having spent ten years in Jordan in a refugee camp. There was a mum, a dad and three beautiful children who were all born in a refugee camp. We welcomed and supported them, introduced them to neighbours, got places for the children in local schools. Everything was new for them, and we began to see our city through their eyes. We found out about their rich culture, their interests and customs, Halal food, the local Mosque, Ramadan and Eid. They learned from us about how things work on the ground in Ireland, from getting a bus to finding a GP. Our community worked together to source bicycles for the children, bring them to the library, go on outings to the zoo and cinema and most importantly just be there for them when they needed us. Our family is amazing. We have watched them grow and adapt. We marvel at their kindness and resilience and they are flourishing. Dad is preparing for a university course to upskill and contribute to the Irish workforce. Mum has just given birth to their fourth child, and all are making friends and connecting with the wider community in Ireland. Of course there are great challenges also. One doesn’t flee war and be wrenched from their family and home without deep scars. It takes time to heal and put down new roots. However, we have been privileged to be part of their journey as they are part of ours. They are our family, and we are their community.” #CommunitySponsorship #RefugeesWelcome #CeadMileFailte

In two-weeks’ time Ireland is going to the polls again. Electoral candidates must prioritise long-term solutions to integrate and resource ALL communities. The STAD Coalition urges candidates tempted to use divisive and harmful discourse to remember that every person in your constituency deserves a roof over their head, access to healthcare, and a safe community to live in, and there should be no exceptions to that. We must not let asylum seekers be scapegoated. You can find the Civil Society Manifesto Recommendations on International Protection here: https://lnkd.in/ePu3rxTe #GE2024

📨The results are in for the #INTEgreat project, an EU-funded project that aims to build a stronger integration strategy and ecosystem for migrants, refugees and international protection applicants in Europe. Doras has been a partner on this project for almost 3 years and we are pleased to share some of our learning and resources with you. The Integration Strategy Framework (ISF) was developed in the first eight months of INTEgreat by our project partner, the University of Bologna. The ISF is a useful tool designed to guide civil society, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders in creating effective and inclusive programmes for migrant integration, focussing on four main areas: social cohesion, health, employment and training. The Framework can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gGjv5q5j Partners: Limerick City and County Council, Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, Open Cultural Center (OCC) Social Hackers Academy SYNTHESIS Center for Research & Education
