As a trainee Financial Adviser I am absolutely thrilled to have won the Apprenticeship Ireland 'Apprentice of the Year for Finance and Insurance' at the Mansion House on Wednesday night. A big thank you to all at Eolas Money for the nomination (and for their welcome back), and thank you to everyone on the team for their support, with a special mention to Julie Kennedy Fogarty. Their guidance, mentorship and encouragement have been exceptional and I really enjoy helping our clients at Eolas Money with the skills I have gained as an apprentice. My first year with Atlantic Technological University and the LIA has been fantastic, and I am excited to see what the next two years of my apprenticeship have in store for me. This award proves that I have chosen the right career path, and the passion and hard work I put in has paid off. Structured Investment Products - Caveat Emptor! I felt sorry for a client who I spoke with last week who had invested €141,000 (not advised by I or Eolas Money I should add) in what she thought was a “capital protected” pension product. However, she was flabbergasted when recently she received a letter stating that as “the investment is now in its last 6 months to the final maturity date, there is a high risk of a possible loss on the sum invested at maturity”. The significant loss in capital is due to the value of the Euro Stoxx Select Dividend 30 Index being below the initial strike price of 18th December 2019. And the expected 100% capital protection is lost as the underlying investment value had fallen by 40%+ since commencement! Structured products have been available to investors for years and operationally, are extremely complex products to explain to clients. Therefore, I or Eolas Money do not consider structured products as being suitable for our clients to grow long term wealth. But some firms must use them, otherwise they wouldn't have survived as long as they have, and the fees/commissions paid to advisor firms can be high and therefore appealing for firms to promote to their clients. While we won’t know the final value of this product until 18th December 2024, there will be a significant loss in value. If you are being advised to invest in a structured product, please think twice! Happy to provide an alternative strategy that will be much easier to explain and understand – I promise! 😊 #financialplanning #wealthmanagement #eolasmoney
