#AYearinEMI In October European Movement Ireland and Grant Thornton Ireland hosted “CSRD Unpacked: The Practicalities of Implementation and What Comes Next,” which featured a keynote speech from former EU Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union, Mairead McGuinness. As of 1 January 2025, large companies in Ireland with over 250 employees will be required to comply with the CSRD, among others. Large businesses must now place sustainable reporting on the same footing as financial reporting. The event emphasised practical steps for businesses to navigate these new requirements. Speakers stressed the challenges of implementing the directive, particularly in building the necessary skills and capacity, but also highlighted the potential benefits, including uncovering new business opportunities and managing risk more effectively. #AYearinEMI, In November European Movement Ireland published a report highlighting the European Union’s failure to respond to Israel’s ongoing military assaults in Gaza and Lebanon and outlined its obligations to uphold international law. Deputy CEO and Head of Policy & Research Lorna Hayes spoke to Damien Tiernan Déise Today WLR FM to discuss the International Criminal Court decision to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and European Movement Ireland's report; "At European Movement Ireland, what we are saying is that the EU needs to step up and take urgent action to try and push Israel to halt its actions and really grave violations of human rights in Gaza, and we feel the EU has leverage and influence. Given the decision yesterday by the ICC and other international accountability efforts over the last 13 months, the time really is now.” 🎧Listen back 👉https://lnkd.in/eaqtGjqu 📖Read the report in full 👉https://lnkd.in/eZYxTvJx

#AYearinEMI A key theme for the new EU Mandate is EU Competitiveness. In September, following Mario Draghi’s report, The Future of European Competitiveness, there has been much focus on strengthening and improving the EU economy, CEO European Movement Ireland Noelle O Connell spoke to Joe Lynam Newstalk following its launch, discussing the report she said; “It’s big, it’s bold, it’s brave, it’s ambitious and it’s outlining the challenges and the opportunities that are there, that if Europe wants to be bold and cease them, it can. But, it is very clear, in that €750-€850BN will be required per annum to enhance Europe's competitiveness to compete with the US and China.” 🎧 Listen back 👉 https://lnkd.in/dW8fGkEP In May, CEO Noelle O Connell also wrote an op-ed on EU competitiveness for the Business Post highlighting it’s importance during the European elections. “Ireland is a bridge between the EU and the US, and this policy of competitiveness could aid our strategy of balancing the two relationships. At present, the US and China are pursuing more protectionist industrial policies, which has led to the EU reassessing its long-term economic development.” 📰 Read the article 👉 https://lnkd.in/eCdSsBbX

#AYearinEMI In May, European Movement Ireland and Amárach Research launched the annual island of Ireland EU Poll. The #EMIPoll2024 is the only poll dedicated to EU Affairs in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. 🔹 The poll found support for Ireland’s membership of the EU remains strong at 84%, however the 2024 results indicate a notable decline in both jurisdictions on the question of whether the EU is moving in the right direction, with a drop from 58% in 2023 to 49% this year. 🔹 Majority in Ireland do not believe there will be a united Ireland in the EU in the next 10 years: 55%, compared to 58% last year. In Northern Ireland: 47% believe there will be, 43% believe there won’t be, and 10% don’t know. 🔹 Among the areas of low satisfaction with the EU’s performance were its response on issues such as migration, war in Ukraine and the Israel – Gaza conflict. 46% of respondents in Ireland and 44% in Northern Ireland ranked the EU’s performance weakest in the area of migration. The timing of this poll coincided with the debate around the new EU Migration and Asylum Pact. 🔹 Nearly half of respondents in both jurisdictions believe that the EU’s performance is strongest in the area of Trade 46% in ROI, and 55% in NI. This underlines the positive public perception of the Single Market and its benefit to the economies, both North and South. #EMIPoll2024 received coverage across media in Ireland including coverage in The Irish Times, Irish Independent, Irish Examiner, Business Post, TheJournal.ie and Belfast Telegraph, and many other news outlets.
