The Housing Agency has commissioned an independent research report ‘Good practice in the development and design of Traveller specific accommodation’. The report, on behalf of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage explores the value of inclusive and meaningful engagement, the importance of site layout designs that are safe and secure to resident wellbeing, and the importance of fire safety in site planning and layout.   ➡️ Read the report in full here - https://lnkd.in/g3Awdzfm

The Housing Agency is pleased to announce that Martin Whelan has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Agency and will take up the role on 31st March, 2025. Mr Whelan will join The Housing Agency from the National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA) where he is currently Head of Group Corporate Affairs and Communications.

The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) today celebrated its 20th anniversary with a thought-provoking conference on creating an affordable and attractive rental sector for tenants and landlords. In her address, RTB Director, Rosemary Steen, said her key priorities include reducing dispute resolution and improving compliance with rental law through education. The Housing Agency’s Interim CEO, David Silke, took part in a panel discussion under the theme ‘Where to Next for Ireland’s Rental Sector?’ He spoke about the importance of the rental sector and the need to get it right into the future, particularly around boosting supply, providing greater certainty for both landlords and tenants and making sure accommodation standards are high. He highlighted the growth in the number of older people who are renting, and the issue that raises about how people will be able to afford to pay rent after retirement. On the topic of cost rental, Mr Silke said this is an area that has “great potential”. He said Approved Housing Bodies were “very brave” to get into this space early on and it was positive to see the work of the Land Development Agency, as well as AHBs and local authorities around cost rental. “There is lots of hope around cost rental,” he added. #RTB20Years

On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, The Housing Agency has published a new report on Peer Support Models. For many disabled people, independent living can be assisted with peer support. Peer Support is a supportive relationship between people who have shared experiences. It is based on the knowledge that disabled people are experts in recognising the barriers they face and the means in which such barriers can be tackled. As part of the National Housing Strategy for Disabled People, The Housing Agency has examined national and international examples of peer support models and explored what supports are currently available in Ireland and how, if necessary, they can be adapted or expanded to assist disabled people to live independent lives in their community. The report, Peer Support Models, Examining models both nationally and internationally, finds that the value of lived experience has been acknowledged as an integral component in assisting marginalised groups, such as disabled people, to live independently.
