  • This week, members of our chapter, including the Chair Houda B. and Vice Chair Pietro Pampili, participated in an engaging workshop on Narrative CVs at Royal Irish Academy, organised by members of Young Academy Ireland (YAI). The session offered practical insights into Narrative CVs, including funder policies, responsible research assessment, and strategies for showcasing contributions effectively. We were delighted to see our former Chair, Irene Castellano Pellicena, now a board member of Marie Curie Alumni Association, share her valuable experience as a speaker and panelist. The workshop concluded with an interactive exercise, helping participants apply the key elements of Narrative CVs to their own experiences.

  • 🌟 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐢 🌟 🎓 Meet Chiara Maria Mariani, a PhD student in visual optics at University College Dublin, working at the intersection of physics and optometry. Her path to research has been anything but linear, demonstrating that the journey itself is just as important as the destination. 🌍 From her early studies in physics to her current passion for optometry, Chiara’s path highlights the value of interdisciplinary exploration. She demonstrates that changing course and embracing new challenges can lead to even more fulfilling and impactful work. 🚀 Interested in learning more? Read her reflections on her journey: "𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧  My name is Chiara and I am a PhD student at UCD, Dublin, in the Optics group led by Prof. Brian Vohnsen. How I got to Ireland is a more beautiful and uphill path than I could have imagined. It started a good eight years ago, but every single step has been necessary to get where I am now - and for what next. After studying for a few years to become a physicist, I decided to redirect my studies toward optometry—a fascinating field that bridges diverse disciplines like mathematics, physics, chemistry, and psychology. This interdisciplinary nature deeply resonated with my curiosity and passion for exploring connections between various domains of science to explore something apparently so simple as the mechanism of vision. As part of my academic journey, I completed an Erasmus Traineeship at the University of Alicante, where I worked in a holography lab. This experience allowed me to develop hands-on skills in optical laboratories and ignited my interest in optics. Eager to further my knowledge, I pursued advanced studies in clinical optometry at the University of Riga. At the same time, I worked as an optician and optometrist in my home country, Italy. This combination of academic learning and professional practice enabled me to apply my knowledge, gain valuable experience, and discover my true calling. After 2 years of work, and just before submitting my thesis, I applied for a MSCA funded PhD project focused on the prevention of visual conditions—a project that perfectly aligns with my passion for vision science and public health. To date, my journey has taught me that it does not matter where you start and with what tools: what really matters is taking the first step, welcoming changes in your path with positivity and not making comparisons with more linear paths. Closed doors are not dead ends, but redirects that guide you to the opportunities that are truly meant for you."
