Thrilled to officially share that Mayo Dark Sky Park at Wild Nephin National Park is the proud recipient of International Dark Sky Place of the Year award from DarkSky International. It means a great deal considering there are now over 200 dark sky places around the world! We have been busy in the 8 years since accreditation as an IDSP, and there is much more to do. Whilst we have the privilege of very dark skies at the accredited National Park site, we recognise that light pollution is ever increasing and it is our goal to mitigate this further afield by creating a plan to eventually become a dark sky county. This award recognises the work done so far both within and beyond the boundaries of the National Park, in collaboration with our wonderful communities of Newport, Mulranny & Ballycroy (Friends of Mayo Dark Skies). Receiving such an amazing accolade will spur us on to achieve our goals to reduce light pollution in county Mayo and to promote dark skies through partnerships and education.
