Ashton School once again made a huge effort to support Mercy Heroes again this year. TY students were out on the streets of Cork in their dozens to collect donations for our Teen & Young Adult Appeal. In addition, the held a dress down day in school before mid-term to boost their efforts. In total they raised a fantastic €1,037.34 which will fund projects specifically for our Teen & Young Adult patients as they face the challenges of illness. Thank you Ashton School TYs and your teacher Ms. Dennehy – we are very grateful for your generous support.

It was extremely interesting to see what the foundation does and it is one of the main beneficiaries of the Rotary Tree of Remembrance this year which is situated in Patrick street, Cork. This project takes place two weeks leading up to Christmas. Mercy University Hospital Foundation #treeofremembrance #rotary

We are deeply grateful to the Rotary Clubs of Cork and Bishopstown for choosing the Mercy Hospital Foundation as a recipient of funds from this year’s Tree of Remembrance. The iconic tree, which is located on Patrick Street is a long-standing Christmas tradition in Cork city and we’ve met lots of people remembering their loved ones who are grateful for the care they received in the Mercy. Take a moment to stop by the tree and remember your loved one with a personally written message which will be posted on Cork’s biggest Christmas tree. Messages can be posted everyday until 24th December. By supporting the Remembrance Tree you will be supporting our Cancer Appeal and making a real difference in the lives of people going through treatment this Christmas.

This Christmas, we remember people like Pat Howick - a beloved husband, Dad, Granda, brother and friend, who fought a courageous battle with cancer. His family have generously shared their story with us. “Pat’s chemo journey started in October 2016, and as he said, what they gave him ‘thankfully worked’ at the time; but sadly, by February 2024, we were told by his consultant that it was in the hands of the man above...We made the best of the time we had.” Pat passed away on May 20th, 2024, seven days before his 64th birthday. He is sadly missed by his loving wife Mary; children Ken, Katie and Kieran; grandchildren, Leo, Ella and Cillian; extended family, neighbours, and his many many friends. His presence is greatly missed but happy memories live on and are cherished every day. “He appreciated the help, kindness and hard work of all his medical team in the Mercy, for giving him a second chance; and he always wanted to give something back. When he started his chemo journey, without hesitation, he did a Radiothon interview, saying ‘If I can help anyone else out there, I will do it.’ And so, now, we are asking for your support this Christmas, because without supporters like you, we wouldn’t be able to help families like the Howicks through this difficult journey. Funds that you donate will deliver services including our psycho-oncology service and our new Cancer CARE Centre, a non-clinical place for those diagnosed with and being treated for cancer and their families to come.
