“I hear you.” 3 little words, which, when used correctly, can have a big impact. Slow down, be present, use a calm tone of voice. Listen with kindness. And using a simple response like this lets the other person know you care, you’re there for them, that what they are feeling is valid. How much do you need to hear those little words when you’re struggling? We don’t always need fixing - we just need someone to listen and to care. And these words are every bit as important in the workplace. If you’re a leader - slow down, be present, let your team know you really are there for them. Look at all the conflict in the world. Destroying so many lives. And now look a little closer to home…do you know anyone who responds well and knows how to deal effectively with conflict when they’re directly involved? Half of us shut down and avoid conflict like the plague. The other half of us jump in wanting to fix it, ‘let’s talk', but often come across as criticizing or judging. Each triggers the other and before we know it we’re stuck in a negative cycle, each carrying difficult feelings and not sure where to go to make things better. Nobody teaches us how to deal with these difficult emotions in relationships! Especially at work where we’re meant to be “professional” at all times.
