The REPPP team attended the 14th annual meeting of the Illicit Networks Workshop in Leiden, The Netherlands this week. The workshop provided a great opportunity to share learning among researchers, law enforcement and policy makers about the use of network analysis in understanding and tackling organised crime. Dr Sean Redmond presented on the practical challenges in developing evidence-informed interventions for young people involved in criminal networks. Dr Alejandro Dinkelberg presented on the value of combining social network analysis with qualitative data to gain further insights into criminal networks. Its been a busy week for the REPPP Team... Dr Sean Redmond and Helen Fitzgerald attended the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA) Conference on Drug Related Violence in Brussels this week, where Sean presented the learning from the REPPP Greentown Programme and its focus on reducing the influence of criminal networks on children. Dr Catherine Naughton, Dr Megan Ryan, and Dr Antoinette Keaney-Bell of the Stable Lives Safer Streets Hub (SLSS Hub), attended the North South Research Programme Conference “A Catalyst for All-island Collaboration in Research Excellence” in Croke Park. Dr Megan Ryan participated on the Nurturing Talent and Early Career Research Opportunities panel and shared her experience of undertaking applied research and how it can inform policy. Dr Johnny Connolly contributed to RTE News coverage of the one year anniversary of the Dublin Riots, providing an insight into some of the contextual factors behind the events of November 23rd 2023. https://lnkd.in/eBaBzhbS

Join us for a Criminal Networks 'Crash Course'    A lecture with Associate Professor Jacob Young, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University.   Network Criminology is the application of ideas from network science to problems in criminology and criminal justice. REPPP team members Caitlin Lewis and Edel Kelly Cannon presented on the role and work of the Youth Diversion Project (YDP) Research & Development Team at yesterday's YDP National Conference in Croke Park. In particular, the invaluable work of YDP trainers was recognised with excellent presentations by Youth Justice Workers Amy O'Halloran (Edge YDP) and Niamh Ryan (West Limerick YDP) who shared their experiences of delivering training to the YDP Network. Attendees also heard about the opportunity for Youth Justice Workers to apply for the Department of Justice Bursary to undertake a Masters in Human Rights in Criminal Justice in UL. To date, over 60 Youth Justice Workers have successfully completed the Masters, enhancing their own professional capacity while also contributing to the Youth Justice body of research and knowledge.  School of Law UL Adjunct Professor john bamber presented on the new Accreditation Scheme which will recognise excellence in YDP practices. Thank you to Ballyhoura Development CLG for the invite to my REPPP - University of Limerick colleague @Johnny Connolly and I to attend the CITICESS Study Visit and Pilot Action Meeting in Heerlen, The Netherlands this week. Citicess is an Interreg Europe funded project which aims to improve regional/urban development policies dealing with vulnerable target groups by exchanging experiences, piloting innovative approaches and building the capacity of partners by identifying, disseminating, and transferring good practices. In Heerlen, we attended a masterclass on the Breakthrough Method being piloted by the Municipality of Heerlen as an innovative approach to supporting families experiencing multiple complex problems. We met the team and heard about the positive outcomes it is achieving with families so far. We had some great discussions so plenty of new insights and learning for all who attended as part of Ballyhoura's delegation from Ireland. REPPP's Director Dr Sean Redmond and Assistant Director Helen Fitzgerald recently presented some of the learnings from the Greentown Programme ('From Research to Implementation') at the 8th Annual Justice Sector Agency roundtable event in Farmleigh House. Funded by the Department of Justice, and delivered by community-based organisations, the Greentown Response Programme is currently being trialled in 2 locations in Ireland. The Programme aims to reduce the influence of criminal networks on child offending and improve pro-social outcomes for children involved in criminal networks. It does so by implementing 4 interrelated pillars: Network Disruption; Community Efficacy Programme; Intensive Family Programme; Pro-Social Opportunities Programme. It was great to see the interest in this evidence-informed programme that was developed following extensive research by the REPPP team to map children's involvement in criminal networks in a number of locations in Ireland.

Supervised by Dr Sean Redmond and Dr Catherine Naughton. Rebecca's excellent PhD is sure to make a positive impact for our most vulnerable children and the staff who care for them.
