Ten #UCC School of Pharmacy students thoroughly enjoyed their 4-month #Erasmus placements in universities across Europe in Croatia, France, Germany, Spain and Sweden, where they gained research skills and experienced new cultures. Thanks to our Erasmus partners for facilitating this experience and to Dr Maria Donovan for organising the Erasmus exchanges. We look forward to hearing more about their #PharmacyStudentExperience when they return in January.

I am very pleased to share the latest paper from my PhD, "Establishing a Pharmacoinformatics Repository of Approved Medicines: A Database to Support Drug Product Development." This research was published in Molecular Pharmaceutics as part of a joint special issue with Bioconjugate Chemistry on "Computational Methods in Drug Delivery." The vast and unstructured data available to optimise drug product development exceeds the capacity for manual analysis, requiring significant curation. In this study, we combine web scraping, programmatic access, and cheminformatics toolkits to create a highly linked database of approved medicines. We then demonstrate its utility in tasks such as excipient selection and pharmacokinetic prediction using a mix of established and novel approaches. Our findings emphasise the need for accurate, complete regulatory data and a robust data model of drug product information to drive research in this area. School of Pharmacy, UCC hosted over 70 transition and 5th year students for UCC Medicine and Health 'H4Y Careers in Healthcare Day'. Organised to encourage students under-represented on healthcare programmes to consider healthcare as a career choice, students gained unique insights into range of of healthcare programmes including @Occupational Therapy, Paramedicine, Speech and Language Therapy, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing and Midwifery. We’ve gone back to University! Like hundreds of pharmacy students all across the island of Ireland the McLernons team went back to school…..to the five Schools of Pharmacy north and south of the Border in Belfast, Coleraine, Cork and Dublin. We have donated our pharmacy dispensing software to each of these in order to assist the education of pharmacy undergraduates by familiarising them with the most widely-used dispensing system in community pharmacy on the island. Of course, not only does this benefit the Schools of Pharmacy and their students, but it also ensures that all of our McLernons customers can be happy in the knowledge that any new pharmacy placement students, locums and new employees who have been trained in Ireland can hit the ground running with a good working knowledge of our MPS dispensing system. We have recently been in touch with all five centres of learning to meet the Heads of School, ensure the dispensing software is working well in each of their campuses, offer additional training to key staff and present a plaque as a commemoration of our sponsorship.

Congratulations to Ruth Maher, 3rd year #pharmacy student at the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork, who presented her research poster at the UCC Medicine and Health "Futures 2024: Transforming Tomorrow's Health" on 12th December. Her poster, titled "Community Pharmacists' Views on Extending Prescription Duration in Ireland: A Survey Study", explores the recent change in practice allowing #pharmacists to extend prescriptions from 6 to 12 months. The national survey, which received responses from over 750 pharmacists in #Ireland, provides key insights into the perspectives of pharmacists on this development, which should guide the planning and implementation of expanded pharmacist roles to address the rising demand for #healthcare in Ireland. Ruth's #research was funded by a Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Award and was supervised by Dr Kieran Dalton and Dr Suzanne McCarthy from the School of Pharmacy (pictured). We are delighted to see her research showcased at this conference and look forward to further outputs from her work. #PharmacyStudentExperience
