Scientists recently declared the Slender-billed Curlew extinct - the first known global #birdextinction from mainland Europe, North Africa and West Asia. Unless #biodiversityloss is treated as the crisis that it is, it won’t be the last. As BirdWatch Ireland remind us in the linked article, the loss of the Slender-billed Curlew serves as a stark reminder that extinction is happening in real-time, on our watch, and within Ireland. Our breeding population of #curlews is in danger. The #CornBunting, a once common farmland bird, has been extinct in Ireland since the 1990s. Species such as the #HenHarrier are on the brink, with only 85-106 breeding pairs believed to remain in the country, with just one known pair of #RingOuzel. Scientists know what needs to be done to reverse species declines and it is up to national and global leaders to step up and take collaborative action. #RestoreNature Published in the International Journal of #AvianScience, the analysis of the Slender-billed Curlew’s conservation status was a collaboration between RSPB, BirdLife International, Naturalis Biodiversity Center and the Natural History Museum. Investing in nature is investing in our future. As the final days of #COP29 negotiations approach, governments must recognize nature’s critical role in climate action. Today, a global group of more than 70 NGOs, business coalitions, Indigenous Peoples organizations, and influential individuals has issued an urgent ‘COP29 Nature Statement’ calling for strong recognition of nature in the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance text under discussion in #Baku right now. Following on from the recent introductory course, Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) will run another training course on Intermediate #QGIS for #Ecologists and Environmental Practitioners on 27-28th November, 2024 in Moate, Co. Westmeath with George Smith. The course will cover: - Importing/exporting to/from other GIS software, CAD and spreadsheets - Georeferencing map images - Intermediate digitising tools, tricks and tips - Spatial data QA - fixing errors and topology problems - Accessing Web Mapping Service (WMS) data - Querying ecological data - Geoprocessing The course assumes some basic QGIS experience, including basic digitising, manipulating symbology and editing attribute tables. We are getting a fuzzy feeling celebrating #InternationalMensDay today in the office with a coffee morning showing off our Movember charity efforts to raise awareness and funds for men's wellbeing. It was great to chat about how men and their loved ones can be more aware of potential health issues that often get overlooked, including #MentalHealth, and prostate and testicular cancer, and how we can support the men we care about to lead healthier, longer lives. We have established a #Movember team this year and all monies raised will be matched by #ScottCawley. Happy to note that the Government has announced an Independent Advisory Committee on #NatureRestoration in Ireland to help the effective roll-out of plans under the Nature Restoration Law (#NRL). Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Minister Charlie McConalogue TD, and Minister for Nature at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage Malcolm Noonan TD said the development of Ireland’s Nature Restoration Plan (#NRP) must be co-designed with all stakeholders, including farmers and fishers, in a spirit of "collaboration, understanding and partnership." The Committee includes science broadcaster Dr Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain (PhD), Chair of the Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss, Farming for Nature Ambassador David Kerr, BirdWatch Ireland CEO Linda Lennon CBE, retired fishing policy officer Norah Parke, Prof Tasman Crowe of University College Dublin, who is Chair of Ireland’s National Biodiversity Forum, and Joe McGrath of Tipperary County Council. They will engage with stakeholders and consider outputs from technical, inter-departmental working groups across themes of Land, Sea, Towns and Cities, and Finance. 👏 https://lnkd.in/e3jFiq7J
