About us
Sonraí aims to enable the development of data stewardship skills across the national research landscape through raising the profile data stewards, greater recognition of the need for data stewardship, professionalisation of the role of data steward and skills, and knowledge development throughout the emerging community. By developing these skills nationally we can ensure the curation, preservation and dissemination of our national data assets, and the continued growth and development of our FAIR data landscape.

Two new reports from Sonraí project on the critical need for professionalisation of data stewardship and training needs data stewards and the wider research community.
Our vision is a network of data stewards to support Ireland's transition to a FAIR and open research data landscape.
Research data stewardship is core enabler of engagement with FAIR and Open Data, effective data management and reduction in research waste. As the role of data steward grows in importance, the need for professionalisation and tailored learning pathways has become critical. Over the past 2 years we have engaged in broad consultation across the research community. This has culminated in 2 reports on professionalisation and data stewardship training now available on our website https://lnkd.in/eSDd3vx3 Sincere thanks to Sonraí project partners and those who participated in the interviews for their time and contributions and to our funder the National Open Research Forum Jenny O'Neill Junwen Luo Darren Dahly PhD Brendan Palmer Orla Murphy Chris Burbidge Johanna Archbold Maeve Hynes Marcus Munafò Aoife Coffey

𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐀𝐈): 𝐀 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞—𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭? 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐏𝐀𝐏𝐄𝐑! We are excited to share the findings of our latest study, where we explore how GenAI both enables and challenges Open Science. Conducted collaboratively by an international team, including me, Mohammad Hosseini, Serge Horbach, and Kristi Holmes, our study examines GenAI’s opportunities and risks through the lens of the UNESCO Recommendation for Open Science. 𝐓𝐋;𝐃𝐑: GenAI has enormous potential to enhance accessibility and efficiency in science. But to avoid jeopardising trust, we need clear ethical guidelines that prioritise openness, fairness, and transparency. ✨ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 GenAI holds incredible potential to transform scientific work. From simplifying complex research into accessible language to breaking down language barriers through translation, GenAI can make science more inclusive, accessible, and understandable. It also creates exciting possibilities for greater public engagement by enabling citizens to actively contribute to research processes. 🔍 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 However, GenAI’s power comes with significant challenges. Many AI models operate as “black boxes,” with decisions that are difficult to trace—a clear conflict with Open Science’s principles of transparency. Biases in training data could reinforce existing social inequalities, and the environmental impact of high computational demands raises sustainability concerns. 🌍 𝐀 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐞 Our study underscores the need for collaboration across science, technology, and policy. Researchers must adopt a critical approach to GenAI integration, developers must design transparent and unbiased tools, and policymakers must establish frameworks that balance innovation with risk management. We invite you to read the full study, “𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐈 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧: 𝐀𝐧 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬,” published in Quantitative Science Studies (MIT Press) here: https://lnkd.in/dCr7SW7F Let’s work together to ensure that GenAI aligns with the values of Open Science! 📩 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐮𝐬: - Mohammad Hosseini: mohammad.hosseini@northwestern.edu - Tony Ross-Hellauer: tross@know-center.at #OpenScience #AI #GenAI

As we all know, correlation is not causation, but something might have happened last week that has led to a lot of people setting up bluesky accounts. Anyway, Jenna Jordan has set up a #datalibs starter pack there for anyone making the move and to get set up https://lnkd.in/gwD-GWaV
