https://lnkd.in/dgXZjruS Another metro's water security threatened due to high NRW, a national trend of around 50% is catastrophic and is now on an exponential increase as the water distribution systems are completely compromised with patch work increasing the problem. COJ requires R26bn now to address the physical leaks at similar levels to eThekwini with the later having around 10% more distribution km's. So, eThekwini will require at least R26bn now with its stated inability to fund itself. So, quo vadis as the only other source of funding is the private sector and realistically an A team would take at least 5 years to implement such a comprehensive and very complex program? Unfortunately the immediate prognosis is not a good one, what does one expect after sweating the assets for 30 years? I recently saw this graphic. The data is alarming: many regions in South Africa are losing over 50% of their water supply to NRW (Non-Revenue Water). This isn't just a loss of revenue; it's a loss of an invaluable resource. We must prioritize reducing NRW to save water and reinvest the recovered revenue in critical infrastructure. https://lnkd.in/dHm9WFWs That the agricultural sector loses over a third of its water, using some 60% of SA's direct water demand, in a water scarce country is incomprehensible. To put this in context, this lost volume is equivalent to the urban real demand, so without the NRW, with so e left over. Governance frameworks with reformed regulatory philosophies are urgently required, enabled by the latest digital tools that have started enabling such processes globally, time for us in ZA to join the movement or fall further behind. Water Ledger Global addresses these issues with the latest ledgering and tokenisation tools already deployed in the USA and Australia for some time. "The DWS further highlighted that climate change-related challenges, such as low rainfall, high evaporation rates and water losses, also remain, exacerbating water scarcity issues, while nonrevenue water currently stands at 47%, significantly higher than Denmark's 5%. Irrigation schemes in South Africa are also experiencing water losses of between 35% to 45%."
