Many have asked us about the PayPal Honey browser extension, which has been accused of redirecting affiliate commissions from influencers to itself and promoting deals that may favor its retail partners over better discounts. While this doesn’t mean the extension directly threatens your safety, Guardio points out that behind-the-scenes activities like these can raise concerns. Users should stay cautious by checking their browser extensions (you can use Guardio to identify and manage risky extensions).

Almost exactly a year ago, Brian Krebs and I were talking about VexTrio. He asked me: So you really don’t know who these guys are? They must advertise somewhere! For years i envisioned a bunch of hoodied hackers in their parents basement offering up commodity services to lowlife criminals. Boy was I wrong. We now know exactly who VexTrio is. The challenge has become not who they are, but just how much they control. We’ve gathered enough knowledge to write hundreds of pages and it’ll take us time to figure out how to make a coherent picture for the community... The last few months have been an adventure— as we chased down VexTrio, they tried to destroy evidence… yanking websites, changing LinkedIn profiles, pulling pictures from Google Maps… but thanks to our propensity to take screenshots and the amazing treasure that is the internet…. the evidence remains. My prediction for 2025? I think that people are finally going to realize shady adtech is a serious threat that is able to deliver malware, steal people’s money, and feed disinformation in a way that is hard to defeat. If only a small fraction of the 10B+ impressions the malicious players claim to make globally every day are true, it’s a formidable criminal force. We are grateful for everyone who has collaborated with us on VexTrio, especially Qurium, Randy McEoin, and Sucuri Security. (Denis Sinegubko) ... also Dave Mitchell is a tremendous addition to Infoblox Threat Intel... as Randy says, he's a beast. And beyond VexTrio there is a complex web of nefarious characters that we’re only starting to see… thanks to Guardio, SURBL and others for collaboration on these. Stay Tuned. There is so much more to come. When you see it, you can’t unsee it. #dns #threatintel #malware #scam #phishing #adware #disinformation #malvertising #threatintelligence Infoblox

🚨 Thousands of Daily Victims: Deceptive Ads Fueling Fake Captcha Scams 🚨 Guardio Labs’ latest DeceptionAds research uncovers a disturbing malvertising campaign driving 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝘁𝘀. Unsuspecting users are tricked into fake Captcha pages, leading to the installation of Lumma info-stealer malware, one of the most destructive threats online that takes over accounts, credentials, passwords, files, and more. This campaign is a striking example of how malicious ads can seamlessly integrate into the online ad ecosystem, spreading threats without us even realizing we are looking at 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 content. Guardio Labs, in collaboration with Infoblox, traced this operation to a major ad network enabling these attacks at scale. Read the full research: https://lnkd.in/dkxV6cHt
