Is it shopping season for Israeli technology? The recent surge in M&A activity in Israel is the most significant sign of hope and optimism I’ve seen since October 7th. It demonstrates the potential of Israeli tech and the faith placed in it by top global companies. When technology leaders choose to further expand into Israel and acquire local teams, you know financial outlooks are positive. In cybersecurity - often the poster-child of Israeli tech - we’ve seen five acquisitions in quick succession totaling more than $1Bn. Flow Security by CrowdStrike (~$200M), Avalor Security, a Zscaler Company ($350M), Gem Security (acquired by Wiz) ($350M), Silk Security by Armis ($150M) and Entitle by BeyondTrust (~150M). All are led by exceptional individuals, well done! Perhaps more telling is the emerging AI industry. Last week NVIDIA announced its acquisition of two companies for a combined value of $1Bn. Congratulations RunAI ($700M) and Deci AI ($300M). Mainstream media is so focused on the voices of a racist minority calling for boycotts and divestments that they fail to capture actual news. Antisemites might yell the loudest, but the actions of multinational corporations speak louder than words. I am optimistic about the future. Are you?

Very interesting report of Israel's AI ecosystem by F2 Venture Capital, Google Cloud and Deloitte. 🔍 On a high level: - The AI startup ecosystem in Israel is booming, with over 2,150 active AI companies, representing ~30% of the local tech sector. - Startups leveraging AI attracted over 60% of all capital raised in 2023. - The country ranks 3rd globally in private AI investment, demonstrating its strong position in the global AI market. 💡 Key takeaways from the report: - Vertical AI is a stronghold. It attracts the largest share of private funding, with Life Sciences, Healthcare and Fintech (banking, financial services and insuretech) leading the charge. Israel's deep domain expertise in these sectors positions it as a potential global leader. - Autonomous Enterprise (Horizontal AI) shows promise. Cybersecurity is a particular strength, capturing 56% of the segment's funding However, the development of multi-modal, end-to-end solutions and AI agents presents further opportunities for cross-industry applications. - AI & Data Ops is a key area for growth. Israel's strong talent pool and focus on enhancing existing infrastructure make it well-suited to address the growing demand for cloud-based AI Ops platforms and efficient data management solutions. The capital raised in Q3/2024 reached $2.4 billion, a 40% increase from Q3/2023. This was driven by one exceptional mega-round by Safe Superintelligence, which contributed $1 billion. - Mega-rounds have significantly impacted the total investment amounts in recent years. In the first nine months of 2024, there were two deals worth nearly $1 billion each (Wiz and Safe Superintelligence), which are considered outliers. When these outliers are removed, 2024 could be the first year since 2021 to see growth in both investment amounts and the number of deals. - The number of new Israeli unicorns is increasing. Six new unicorns were identified in Q1-Q3/2024, compared to only four for all of 2023. Capital raising by unicorns has also increased, particularly in Q2-Q3/2024. - Early-stage companies are experiencing increased capital raising. Excluding the mega-round by Safe Superintelligence, early-stage companies raised $565 million in Q3/2024, a significant increase from the $385 million raised in Q3/2023. - US acquisitions are dominating Israeli M&A deal-making. IVC Data and Insights report on the Israeli venture market for Q1-Q3 2024 reveals: - $7.4 billion invested in Israeli startups, surpassing the entire 2023 total of $6.9 billion. - $13 billion generated from exits, a 26% increase from 2023's $10.4 billion. - 23% surge in foreign investments year-over-year. - 67% of capital sourced from global investors, with 33% from Israeli funds. - $2.7 billion secured by early-stage startups, the second-highest figure in Israeli startup ecosystem history (after 2022's record). These figures demonstrate investors' confidence in the long-term sustainability of the Israeli startup ecosystem. Trust received, challenge accepted. We're building the future, brick by brick.

Google's BIGGEST acquisition: Israeli cybersecurity company Wiz. Despite recent doubts, Israel's tech scene is thriving. VCs and big tech see this too. Remember when Intel announced its $25 BILLION chip factory in Israel in late December 2023? It's clear—Israel is still a hotbed for innovation and talent. Here are the stunning reported facts: - Wiz boasts about $500 million in ARR, making this deal’s multiples mind-blowing. - It reached $100m in revenues ONLY 18 months after launch. - Just two months ago, they raised $1 billion at a $12 billion valuation. This deal is a massive win for the global tech ecosystem. It injects much-needed liquidity (a great point made by Harry Stebbings) and boosts Israel's tech landscape during a difficult time for the country. The skeptics can step aside. Israeli #founders today need to embrace design thinking This means focusing on the consumer who will be using the service or product that you’re developing The process may have been initially built without thorough consideration, but design thinking allows us to revisit and analyze what exactly is needed in the most efficient way As an example, processes may have been accepted as they are, until someone comes along and suggests a better way... and when that person steps in and proposes a fresh perspective, that's when #innovation happens At its core, design thinking is about understanding what is truly necessary in a process or action, and determining if it can be done differently, and is the ability to understand what the consumer really needs in any given situation or process, whether it's buying groceries, transportation, communication, etc. There are various methods and stages in design thinking. However, I use the Harvard Business School method, which has four stages, the first one being clarification The goal of clarification is to understand and identify the main pain point in the situation. This stage is about filtering out the noise and focusing on the situation at hand, to glean insights that may have been overlooked or undervalued before Often, this pain point is latent, something the consumer experiences but doesn't recognize as the main issue. The methods used at this stage involve observing the situation, being present in the space, and trying to understand what is missing and how the process can be improved The key is to gain a different perspective or insight that others haven't yet identified. If you can solve a problem that everyone is experiencing, then you potentially have a good business idea…. A prime example of the importance of being customer or human-centered, which is at the core of design thinking, is Google's failed Google Glasses project. Google invested about a billion dollars to develop this unique device, but after years of development and attempts to market it, they had to shut it down Why? Because no one was buying it! The product didn't solve a problem for anyone… it was a "nice to have" but not a "must-have" In design thinking, we're looking for solutions to real problems There are three must-have attributes in design thinking to determine if a product is worth investing in: Desirability Feasibility And viability If a product lacks any of these characteristics, it's not a go. These three characteristics are crucial in testing if a product is worth developing and investing time and resources into. Take a look at this picture. It was taken today at our Salesforce offices in Tel-Aviv. It shows a few dozens of Salesforce Israel employees in one of our regular all-hands meetings. What's so special about that? Well, that picture was taken exactly 36 hours after Iran launched a massive aerial strike against Israel with 100s of UCAVs, ballistic and cruise missiles carrying about 60 tons(!) of explosives. Thanks to the Israeli Air force, the air forces of the US, UK, France, Jordan and others *and* Israeli innovation and engineering talent who developed the most advanced multi-layered air defense systems in the world - luckily that attack ended up with relatively low impact. It was a sleepless night for all us in Israel who got an advanced notice of the attack and basically spent that night bracing for impact. Now take another look at this picture. 36 hours later - People showing up at the office, talking to each other, having a few laughs, having meetings, discussing deadlines, solving business problems, discussing engineering problems, doing demos, having coffee and lunch together, having an all-hands meeting together. 36 hours ago we were bracing for impact of 60 tons of explosives that were about to fall out of the sky.
