"You are tired. You will #burnout. Why don't you QUIT and start again when it is less difficult?" The number of times I've been told this over the last few years has been intriguing! 🙄 Never by my family; They know me too well and respect that I am my own person, and I am capable of taking care of myself. It's mostly by individuals who matter in the ecosystem, and maybe they actually care but they don't understand me! 🌪 The last few years have been hard for startups; it is not a hidden fact, but life is about cycles. The good is followed by bad, and the bad by good. You ride the wave, and if you do it in the most authentic way you possibly can you do not spend extra energy keeping up with an act. 👊 I am very good at taking punches to the gut; that's why I am so comfortable taking the less ordinary path - this has been the case since I was a child. The unknown excites me because it is filled with curveballs. Every time I get beaten down hard, I am comfortable falling to the ground rather than pretending like everything is okay. I have no problem expressing my pain/discomfort, I also allow myself to cry (hell, why not?) Isn't it the most natural way the human body rebalances itself? 😭 Once Ive taken the fall/punch/blow, I most often find the strength to stand back up - usually I am as good as new if I have cried it out. BUT we as a society, do not allow our daughters to fall! We seem to teach our sons the need to MAN up, not express/ not cry and the importance of staying the course, why then do we run to protect our daughters at the first sign of trouble? God forbid we cry or express discomfort its time for us to be taken home and asked to stay safe. Its messed up these rules! 💡 The next time you meet a founder who expresses discomfort ask her how you can help or even better let her rant for a few minutes - it's all she needs. DO NOT TELL her "she is burnout and needs to quit!" That is exactly the equivalent of not letting your daughters fall, and protecting them and keeping them home safe because the big bad world is terrifying. Do what you would do for your sons! 🐎 To all my fellow female founders, the next time someone tries "protecting you without your permission" walk away! They are doing you no service at all. You cry if you need to, you take your time but stay the course. 🦍 P.S: To the men out there, cry if you need to, express your discomfort more! It doesn't make you look weak, that is such traditional thinking, life is SO MUCH better when you dont have to pretend to be ok or find the need to scream & yell when all you actually want to do is cry or feel beaten down. Allow yourself to express whatever it is you are truly feeling, it will help all of us normalise experiencing the ups and downs of life, the way it is naturally meant to be experienced. If you needed to hear this today, for all the Mrs.Maisel fans out there "Tits up"!
