#Climate on the #balancesheets "The heat wave featured no fewer than 80 times in earnings calls for the quarter ended June — an all-time high — data of Nifty 500 companies compiled by Bloomberg showed. That’s a significant jump from just seven mentions in the year-ago period." Very interesting insight captured by Bloomberg, pointing both to the increasing risk of #climatechange on business performance and growth as well as the growing awareness among corporates to identity and acknowledge it. At 7th Gen Ventures we are working with a number of companies on both these sides - building awareness towards #disruptions caused by #heatwaves and other climate events, and developing abilities to deliver for #environmentalimpact across processes and systems, products and services. From #agriculture to #supplychain, #production to #manufacturing, #logistics to #distribution, #packaging to #wastemanagement. Deficit or headroom? If India is to achieve its ambitious 2070 #netzero target, the aggregate investment support it will need will be $1.4 trillion at an average of $28 billion per year, as per the Economic Survey for 2023-24 tabled by the Finance Minister in the Parliament. As per the Reserve Bank of India, bridging this substantial funding gap necessitates allocating 2.5% of India's annual GDP to #greenfinance. A 2022 report by the Climate Policy Initiative found that domestic sources accounted for the majority of green finance in India, at 87% and 83% in fiscal years 2019 and 2020, respectively. “While international sources are increasing (from 13% in FY 2019 to 17% in FY 2020), they are still insufficient to meet India's net-zero target. Mobilising substantial capital from traditional sources presents multifaceted challenges in emerging economies like India,” said the Survey. This is a challenge as well as an opportunity. And as long as we acknowledge it and see it, respectively, as a challenge and an opportunity, we can work towards addressing it. It's about the commitment. At 7th Gen Ventures we are, in our own small way, working towards plugging the gaps, funding #startups working in #sustainability and #climatetech, supporting committed entrepreneurs with access to money, markets and mentoring. We are here, excited about India and the #makeinindia story in addressing #climatechange. And committed to making a difference. If you are a startup that's also committed to India's march towards reducing pollution, and improving lives, get in touch. With Anirban Bhattacharya Gautam Khot Rajeev Nair and Shyam Sukhramani

We can't move away from #plastic. But can we improve what plastic is and what plastic does? "It’s undeniable that plastics have made daily life more convenient, affordable and, in some cases, safer. Plastic has even helped in efforts to slow climate change: lightweight plastic auto parts have made vehicles more fuel-efficient, and plastic packaging can require less energy to produce and transport than alternatives like glass or metal. Still, the world also has a huge plastic waste problem. And the problem is bigger than you." At 7th Gen Ventures, we are working with #startups to solve this huge problem. We are not just looking at #endoflife - #recycling and #wastemanagement but also #alternatematerials that make #plastic better - less #polluting, more #biodegradable, less harmful. For corporates who depend on plastic for #parts to #packaging, we are coming up with some game-changing #innovation. If you are interested to know more about our focus on cleaning up the #plasticindustry, as a startup or a corporate, do get in touch with our partners Anirban, Gautam, Rajeev or Shyam. #sustainability #climateaction #operatorVC #acclerator #startupecosystem #plasticwaste #plasticpollution

“Despite governmental discussions #policy and development #rulesandregulations recognising the adverse effects of #climatechange and seeking to combat it, there is no single or umbrella #legislation in India which relates to climate change and the attendant concerns. However, this does not mean that the people of India do not have a right against the adverse effects of climate change..." At 7th Gen Ventures we are in the business of #climateaction and #sustainabledevelopment. And we wholeheartedly welcome the honourable Supreme Court of India extraordinary verdict including protection against the impacts of #climatechange in the #righttolife provisions of our #constitutionofindia “The importance of the environment, as indicated by these provisions, becomes a right in other parts of the Constitution. Article 21 recognises the right to life and personal liberty while Article 14 indicates that all persons shall have equality before law and the equal protection of laws. These Articles are important sources of the right to a clean #environment and the right against the adverse effects of climate change... “Without a clean environment which is stable and unimpacted by the vagaries of climate change, the right to life is not fully realised. The right to #health is impacted due to factors such as #airpollution, shifts in vector-borne #diseases, rising #temperatures, #droughts, shortages in food supplies due to crop failure, storms, and flooding." In all our work, we are driven by that single concern of how to fully realise the right to life. 10 areas we are closely working on, and keen to talk to startups: 1) #Agriculture, Performance to Technology 2) #CleanEnergy, Generation to Storage 3) #ConsumerProducts, Packaging to Materials 4) #Fashion, Production to Waste 5) #Logistics, Efficiency to Impact 6) #MaterialsSciences, Chemistry to Applications 7) #Soil, Protection to Regeneration 8) #SolidWaste, Management to Treatment 9) #UrbanMobility, Technology to Infrastructure 10) Water, Management to Treatment With Anirban Bhattacharya, Gautam Khot, Shyam Sukhramani, Rajeev Nair

#food waste and #packaging are two huge challenges for #sustainability. "Food is the most common material in #landfills. The average American family of four spends $1,500 each year on food that ends up uneaten. Of that, fruits and vegetables make up nearly half of all household #foodwaste, according to research from Michigan State University. And it’s not just the wasted food that adds to #climatechange. The #farming and #transportation wasted to produce food that is discarded impacts the climate, too." It's not uncommon to hear that argument why #produce like #fruitaandvegetables need to be packed, often in #plastic wrappers and boxes. And while it's easy to identify plastic as the usual culprit for #pollution, the science makes it more complex: decaying vegetables and fruit create almost 60% of landfill #methane #emissions, according to a 2023 report by the Environmental Protection Agency. And: "A Swiss study in 2021 showed that each rotting cucumber thrown away has the equivalent environmental impact of 93 plastic cucumber wrappers." So it's clear that packaging is essential for the longevity of food items and reducing #carbonemissions from early decay. The problem is to find #sustainable #alternatives to the #packagingmaterials that cause less harm to the environment without compromising on #storage effectiveness. At 7th Gen Ventures we are working on this problem with #startups working in #materialsscience to create such sustainable alternatives to plastic, #glass and other materials like #styrofoam and #aluminum. We are seeing a lot of great #scienceandtechnology at play, and many #ideas are translating into #innovations that are #problemsolving for business. The #startupecosystem in #india is #solvingfortheworld. With Anirban Bhattacharya, Rajeev Nair, Shyam Sukhramani, Gautam Khot

Can Nike change its #narrative on #sustainability? A great read to remind of the great work the company is doing to meet its #netzero goals. Yet as this excellent analysis also reminds that while the progress is significant, there's a lot left to be done: "the 69% absolute reduction in #greenhousegasses at owned and operated facilities, and an impressive 100% diversion from #landfill with regard to Tier 1 manufacturing. The 69% marks a further 4% on the numbers posted in the FY22 Impact Report and keeps Nike on target for its 2025 target of a 70% reduction, also seeing an increase in #renewableenergy usage at these facilities – now up to 96% from last year’s 92%. It’s important to remember, however, that these are only Scope 1 and 2 emission – categories which exclude huge parts of the Nike #valuechain and, therefore, large #emissions values as well. That’s not to say it isn’t progress – it is. But it’s a more specific (and considerably less broad) level of progress than that 69% marquee number might suggest." Which is the real problem statement here - for a large global company in the #fashionindustry, so much is outside of direct corporate control. Monitoring and managing massive #supplychains that circle the earth, from #farms, #transportation, #production, #manufacturing, #packaging, #logistics, #distribution, #salesandmarketing, #wastemanagement - every stage and step involves complex processes and causes #pollution and generates waste. At 7th Gen Ventures we are working with corporate clients in #fashion and #sports industries to solve for such complexity. Helping harness both the #intrapreneurial energy for #innovation that resides inhouse with our unmatched #capability development expertise and leveraging our vast #startupecosystem network for excellent ideas. Helping organizations change the narratives for good. With Anirban Bhattacharya Shyam Sukhramani Rajeev Nair Gautam Khot

The story of Renewcell is symbolic of the huge challenge facing the industries - the cots of #adoption of #sustainable and #environmentalfriendly solutions are expensive. Which is one of the key #innovation areas we are focusing on at At 7th Gen Ventures: working with startups to see how we can help reduce the costs for #sustainability for companies in the #fashionindustry. "The plight of Renewcell illustrates the fashion industry’s hesitancy in adopting new materials that may be better for the environment but typically cost more, at least in the short term. It is also another sign of how some companies are putting less emphasis on green initiatives amid a more challenging economic climate. While the transition from gasoline cars to electric vehicles has benefited from billions of dollars in subsidies, the move to new textiles has received practically no government support, making startups reliant on private funding."
