INDIA IS THE 3RD LARGEST DIGITALIZED ECONOMY GLOBALLY! I virtually attended the State of India’s Digital Economy Report 2025 launched by ICRIER yesterday. It highlighted India's rapid digital transformation, ranking it the 3rd largest digitalized economy globally. Despite this, India ranks 8th overall due to lower per-user digitalization. The digital economy is growing twice as fast as the overall economy and is expected to contribute 20% of GDP by 2029. Using the CHIPS (Connect, Harness, Innovate, Protect, Sustain) framework, India excels in digital payments and ICT exports but lags in AI research (ranked 11th) and cybersecurity (ranked 25th). The UPI system has grown at 89.3% CAGR in volume, showcasing India's fintech dominance. Additionally, India is a top contributor to AI projects on GitHub and 3rd in startup unicorns. In the discussion, Amitabh Kant stressed the need for sovereign AI and better GDP measurement to reflect digital progress. Also, he mentioned that India's digital economy is expanding rapidly, but the productivity paradox (Solow Paradox) slows measurable growth due to GDP measurement gaps, skill mismatches, and transition costs. While AI and automation boost efficiency, their full impact on productivity gains will take time to materialize. India is the 3rd Largest Digitalised Country in the World! Center for Internet and Digital economy launched 'State of India's digital economy report 2024'. They used #CHIPS ( Connect, Harness, Innovate, Protect and Sustain) Framework for this report compilation. These are the 5 pillars and there are sub-pillars & indicators under it. Even though #India has come third but gap with first and second ( #USA and #China) is very significant. Hope the gap will reduce fast in coming years ! Some more salient points from the report : 1. Digitalisation has made dramatic progress, but the way it is being measured has not! 2. India’s rapid digitalization is being driven by: large base, high growth, facilitated by DPIs, and strong gender and geographical convergence. 3. At the sub-national level, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Gujarat and Haryana take the top five spots. Trying to increase renewable capacity by artificially inflating demand through RPOs is not likely to work when we have supply side constraints. We need to work on those issues which are troubling developers and get rid of those policies which are actually increasing the cost of supply of renewable power.
