Our tribute to Dr. Manmohan Singh: The former Prime Minister, and a Founding Member of IRADe. With profound sorrow, IRADe mourns the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, a founding member of IRADe, the Former Prime Minister of India, and a distinguished economist whose visionary leadership and unparalleled contributions have left an indelible mark on India and the world. Dr. Singh’s unwavering support, profound intellect, wise guidance, and warm personality were a source of inspiration to all of us at IRADe. As a founding member, he supported our vision and played a pivotal role in shaping our mission. His steadfast belief in the power of research, particularly multi-disciplinary one, policy analysis that accounted for stakeholder concerns, and collaboration continues to guide our work. There were many discussions regarding how best to set up IRADe, some at his residence, where he and Mrs. Gursharan Kaur, provided warm hospitality, during 2002, when he was a member Rajya Sabha and also afterwards. He graciously inaugurated IRADe‘s first major event Energy Conclave, a 3- day event, where there was a comprehensive debate on many aspects of energy sector. Dr. Kirit Parikh, Chairman IRADe, worked directly with him as a Member of Planning Commission for 5 years (2004-2009). Dr Jyoti Parikh, Executive Director IRADe, served as a Member of Prime Minister’s Advisory Council on Climate Change from 2007-2010. India has lost not only a pioneer in the field of economics and governance but also a wise, cherished mentor and advocate for sustainable and inclusive development. His legacy will forever remain a guiding light for us and future generations. On behalf of the entire IRADe team, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this time of grief. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Just Transition for India’s Coal Mining Districts IRADe is happy to share the article by Dr. Sudipa Majumdar, Director, and Navpreet Saini, Senior Research Analyst, IRADe, in Renewable Watch Magazine on the topic “Just Transition: Need for Green Transition in the Coal Mining Districts of India.” As India moves towards Net Zero emissions by 2070, the socio-economic implications for the coal-dependent states need special attention. To make this green transition truly “just”, India must balance environmental goals with comprehensive support for the mine workers by creating safer jobs, attracting investments and enhancing social welfare services. The shift would require upskilling workers, improving infrastructure, and supporting displaced workers in the coal mining districts of India. Dear Readers, We are excited to bring you the October-November 2024 edition of the IRADe Research Newsletter! This issue highlights IRADe’s efforts to address climate resilience, sustainable energy, and equitable development through impactful initiatives and collaborative engagements. Building the momentum for COP 29 negotiations, Prof Jyoti Parikh, Executive Director and Prof Kirit Parikh, Chairman, IRADe published their article in Business Standard (12 November 2024) on how to bring accountability in climate finance, from the receivers' and donors' perspectives. IRADe has actively participated and contributed to COP events often and this year was no exception. IRADe co-organised a joint event at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan on “Shared Solutions for Shared Risks: Tackling Transboundary Climate Challenges” led by Rohit Magotra, Deputy Director, IRADe. IRADe started its efforts on national capacity-building workshops across 5 regions of India in collaboration with the Central Electricity Authority and completed two days of extensive deliberations during the events. Two workshops, namely, the Eastern Region (Bihar) and the North Eastern Region (Assam) engaged stakeholders in envisioning a resilient power sector, in October and November respectively. We are also happy to share insights from our work related to stakeholder perspectives for "Evolving Roadmap for Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Adoption in India". We hope you enjoy exploring this edition, which reflects our commitment to advancing impactful research and fostering partnerships for sustainable development. Dr. G. N. Qasba, Senior Advisor, IRADe was a panelist in the Session on Water and Climate: The growing concern in mountain settlements in Parvat Manthan Regional Conclave ‘A Dialogue for Enhanced Service Delivery in Water, Used Water and Waste Management for Hill Cities’ held on 3rd to 4th December 2024 at 'The Theatre", India Habitat Centre (IHC), New Delhi. organised by ICIMOD, Nepal and NIUA. He explained the Srinagar model of governance, communication, and use of informal means of human resource mobilization during Srinagar floods. His key recommendations included: · Governance Model Replication: Effective governance requires centralized oversight, with heads of states ensuring proper monitoring of operations. There is need for incorporating this governance approach in other state and local bodies, as well as at the national (apex) level. · Inclusive Capacity Building: Capacity building should not only focus on formal processes but also include the informal mobilization of infrastructure and manpower. Involvement of local community groups in critical decision-making to enhance the responsiveness and effectiveness of operations, particularly during recovery phases after disasters. #ICIMOD #NIUA

🌍💡 Unlocking Regional Cooperation for Clean Energy in South & Southeast Asia 🌱 IRADe is happy to share a research paper by Jyoti Parikh and Navpreet Saini, published in Energy for Sustainable Development, titled "The Role of Regional Grid Connectivity and Cooperation for Decarbonisation: A Case Study of South and South East Asia." The paper explores how cross-border cooperation can reduce fossil fuel dependence, cut CO2 emissions, and accelerate decarbonization in these regions 🌿🌎 This paper is the culmination of a decade-long effort by IRADe under the USAID SARI/E program, UKAID, and ADB etc. It is the result of years of collaboration, including consultations with power system experts and decision-makers from these countries, whose insights and keen interest have been a major motivating force behind this research 🔋⚡ The paper highlighted that Cross-border power trade boosts energy security, decarbonization, and NDC goals by sharing renewables resources. Both the regions are large with growing population and economic growth with increasing needs of power. They are already internally somewhat interconnected. 💚📈 Together, South and Southeast Asia can build a sustainable, energy-secure future, promoting both economic growth and environmental sustainability. 🌏⚡🌱 Read here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gBzHk7Vi Kirit Parikh| Pankaj Batra| Dr. Sudipa Majumdar| Rohit Magotra| Anjana Das| Probal Ghosh #RenewableEnergy #PowerTrade #SouthAsia #SoutheastAsia #Decarbonization #EnergySecurity #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateAction #EnergyForSustainableDevelopment #RegionalCooperation #NDCs #CleanEnergy
