Indian metropolises like Delhi, Lucknow and Mumbai are once again facing severe air pollution as winter arrives. In some places, Mumbai's AQI was around 225, while Delhi recently reported 494, one of its worst AQIs ever. Choking smog has been caused by a lack of wind, increased humidity and pollutants from nearby regions, much like Beijing's 2013 air crisis. Beijing addressed PM2.5 pollution swiftly and aggressively and was able to achieve the targeted air quality difference. Within ten years, the city was able to cut PM2.5 levels by 60% by utilizing the enforcement of Euro VI vehicle regulations, the promotion of electric vehicles, improvements to public transportation and the deployment of more than 5,600 environmental inspectors. In 2019, The National Clean Air Program (NCAP) was introduced by the Indian Government, which aims to reduce particulate matter levels in 121 cities by 20–30% in five years. Tragically, a report by Climate Trends and Respirer Living Sciences revealed that only eight cities accomplished their PM10 reduction goals by the end of 2023, albeit pollution levels had actually risen in the other 22 cities. Following this, the originally planned period for the NCAP was then extended to 2026. India faces significant challenges in terms of enforcement, resource allocation and public awareness. Unlike Beijing, where policy decisions were enforced with military precision, Indian cities often struggle with fragmented governance and lack of coordination. Addressing these gaps will be critical to achieving substantial and lasting improvements in air quality. By installing over 1000 AQI sensors and strict enforcement of the policies, Beijing successfully demonstrated that focused efforts can yield splendid results. China has set an example by contributing 75% of the global reduction in air pollution alone. As time goes by, India faces a crucial question: can it imitate Beijing’s success and protect its citizens from the perils of toxic air?
