The winners of the OTBL Campus Impact Award were felicitated during the celebration of TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute’s #50thAnniversary in Guwahati, Assam on Monday. The winners received their awards in the presence Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI, Dr Banwari Lal, Senior Director, TERI Dr Dipankar Saharia, Senior Director, TERI and Dr Livleen Kahlon, Associate Director, TERI. TERI, in partnership with ONGC TERI Biotech Limited (OTBL), has launched a project, ‘OTBL Campus Impact Challenge’ – an initiative for the #youth and by the youth for creating positive spaces. OTBL CIC was based on the belief that the country's young people must be engaged in #ideation, #innovations, and #action that will ensure the nation's holistic development and contribute to SDGs locally. Colleges and institutes of higher learning from Assam were shortlisted to participate, showcasing their commitment to sustainability by implementing innovative ideas that have driven impactful and transformative changes on their campuses. The OTBL CIC journey encompassed a series of activities, including an orientation webinar, development and submission of physical setups by participating institutes, online progress discussions, personalized interactions, expert-led sessions, mentoring support by TERI, jury visits, and comprehensive evaluations. 🌏TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute, organized an event on ‘India’s Energy Transition in the Transport Sector: Integrating Transport with NDC’. A report titled- 'Roadmap For India's Energy Transition in the Transport Sector' was also launched during the event, today. Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, TERI, in his welcome address, highlighted the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability, and the need for a balanced approach towards energy transition. In a special address, Shri K.R.K. Reddy, Additional Member (Traffic), Railway Board, Government of India, emphasized, "Railways have been a lifeline for India, connecting diverse landscapes and promoting economic development. The country has made significant strides in sustainable mobility, electrifying 99% of its railway network and reducing carbon emissions. Through various initiatives, India aims to enhance infrastructure, increase connectivity, and improve passenger experience." Shri, Mukul Saran Mathur, IRTS, Additional Member (Commercial), Railway Board, Government of India, said, "Railways are undergoing a transition that will impact consumption patterns and energy consumption. The sector has seen significant budgetary increases and is expected to see further growth in domestic container movements." Shri Prakash, Distinguished Fellow, TERI, in his opening remarks, noted, "Transport has become increasingly important over the past 20 years, with a focus on accessibility and air quality. We have started talking about sustainable transport, which is economically viable socially accessible and environmentally tolerable." The media publishes a lot of articles, but nothing actionable happens." Mr Sivasish Thakur, Senior Journalist, The Assam Tribune, noted, "Media needs government support to make an impact. Media plays a role in providing information to local communities on the ground realities." Ms Mubina Akhtar, Independent Journalist, Environment, spoke about the shrinking of wetlands due to climate change. Ms Durba Ghosh, Chief of Bureau, Press Trust of India (PTI), said, "The situation right now requires close collaboration with media houses, industries and colleges. The media houses should also encourage people to go for fellowships." Dr Rathin Barman, Zonal Head, Wildlife Trust of India, underscored, "Media today is TRP driven, whereas they should be the mirror to the society." For 25 years, TERI's #GREENOlympiad has been India’s leading environment-focused Olympiad. It also supports and partners with other initiatives designed to inspire school students. 🎓🏅 The International Value Education Olympiad (IVEO), organized by ISKCON, is one such amazing initiative, with TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute as its Knowledge Partner. The Felicitation Ceremony for students who excelled in IVEO was graced by Shri Bhupender Yadav, Hon'ble Minister, Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of India along with Shri Sandeep Singh, Hon'ble Minister, Department of Basic Education, Uttar Pradesh; and other dignitaries. (4/5) In the third session, a panel discussion was organized on 'Eco-System Restoration Through Community Engagement (UNDP – Small Grants Program).' Dr Dipankar Saharia, Senior Director, TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute, emphasized, how the SGP OP7 takes a landscape-based approach and allows for the project to be scaled up. Dr Jagannath Ambagudia, Campus Director, TISS- Guwahati, highlighted, "The importance of biodiversity conservation, land degradation related traditional ecological knowledge being documented as the oral history has a risk of getting lost with time." Ms Nandita Hazarika, Consultant SGP India, noted, "Use of traditional ecological knowledge is the focal point of the projects being implemented under the Small Grants Programme. Social and human dimensions are important for eco-restoration", Dr Carmo Noronha, Secretary, Bethany Society, said, "Learn from the soil ecology and use it to conserve entire ecosystems. Conservation goals have to be integrated with the livelihood goals of the communities to give them an incentive that is also beneficial for a sustainable model." (3/5) In the second session, a panel discussion was held on 'Leveraging Carbon Financing Mechanism for Enhancing the Livelihoods and Promoting Forest Conservation Activities'. Dr Bidyut Chandan Deka, Vice Chancellor, Assam Agriculture University (AAU), Jorhat, underscored, "A new model needs to be developed where one-fourth of the land has to be converted to agro-forestry. It's important to make people understand the importance of carbon sequestration and carbon finance-an important step towards climate change." Mr Ashwin Shailaja, Manager, Standard Development & Innovation, Gold Standard, said, "Carbon methodology has a global application. Innovative solutions are needed to improve carbon finance by utilizing best practice methods such as the use of good quality fertilizers and pesticides to improve the health of plants." Mr Ivan Zhimomi, Community Representative, Sukhai Village, Zunheboto District, Nagaland, emphasized, "Balipara Foundation and TERI are supporting the development of capacity building workshops and making local people understand the importance of biodiversity. By providing adequate training and employment generation, programs (under carbon finance projects) habitat restoration and the rights of individuals are safeguarded."
