They look different. Does that mean we should treat them differently? I was invited to a Trans-gender event called Translate in Hyderabad on November 24, 2024. A “queer” event that had representation from the LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual) community. A trans-gender person is someone who does not identify with the gender he/she is born with. There were 8 speakers from across the spectrum, who spoke on their journey of why they belong to this particular community. (Videos will be out soon). The rest of us majority is called cis gender (because our gender identity matches the sex we were assigned at birth). What I’ve realised is that since the cis community doesn’t know much about them - we harbour misconceptions, fear about this community. Anyone who’s interacted with them will tell you that these are regular human beings with feelings and emotions like the rest of us. But who’ve been discriminated against in society. Growing up, I always feared Hijras / eunuchs / the third gender. They can be sometimes found at traffic signals, in trains, at a birth ceremony (yes, in North India, Eunuchs are invited by some families to partake in the birth celebrations of a son especially). All that changed when I was selected and listened at a Changemaker session (by Change.org) in 2018. A transgender person addressed the gathering (let’s call her Reema) and she told us horrifying details of how this community is treated by the cis-gender. Many eunuchs take up sex-work because society does not give them any other avenue of employment. If they want to transition into the other gender, they can’t afford it medically and she described how male trans-gender people are actually castrated by quacks. We need to do more for people who don’t look and act like us. Did you know that Corporate India has been trying to create job opportunities for them? Synopsys opened a “Hope in a Cup” cafe in Hyd in 2023 run by the LGBTQIA community. HSBC sponsored setting up of a restaurant by the community in Chennai in 2022. If you would like to help the LGBTQIA community, please reach out on +91 9831593123. Imagine you are a school student and the window to your classroom is overlooking an open sewage area within your school compound.  And the situation has been the same for 7 years.  We at T-SIG / Telangana-Social Impact Group took a Corporate (Vivifi) to a district called Wanaparthy (160 kms from Hyd) on November 25, 2024.  Vivifi India Finance Pvt Ltd, a Hyderabad-based FinTech NBFC / Non Banking Financial Corporation, as part of their annual CSR activity, sponsored infrastructural improvement in 3 KGBVs / Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (Girls’ schools and hostels - class 6 to 10/12). This included building washroom for the students and septic tanks to aid in proper sewage treatment in these schools. When some staff members in this Peddamandadi school witnessed the transformation, they broke down on seeing the final reality. They were so glad that their students would not have to put up with the stench every day, any more. This is what we do.  Bring hope and action to remote corners of Telangana. With the support of 100s of Corporates who are aligned to making a difference in underprivileged lives.  Thank you Team Vivifi for your valuable contribution that has positively impacted 800+ students in 3 schools - at Wanaparthy, Weepanagandla and Peddamandadi. If you're a Corporate or a HNI (High Networth Individual) looking to make a positive impact in any of the 33 districts in Telangana, contact us on csr-cell@telangana.gov.in. You’ll be amazed at the difference you will make.

I was invited as Chief Guest at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, on November 10, 2024. There are young students there (who are also part of Nirmaan’s (NGO) BITS Pilani). There were 200+ students from across colleges in Hyd that I addressed, the theme being ‘My journey in the Corporate world and the Development sector’. In my nearly 19 year professional career I’ve learnt that while it’s important to let your work do the talking, it’s also very important to lift people up in your journey. You’ll be surprised at how every action that goes around, comes around. I was told later that the students enjoyed my interactive session because I always encourage youngsters to ask questions. After all, no one wants to sits through a monologue! Thanks Team BITS Pilani for having me over. Jayesh Ranjan Telangana-Social Impact Group, BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus

  • We at T-SIG / Telangana-Social Impact Group (CSR Wing of Telangana Government) believe in bringing like-minded stakeholders together. For example, on September 28, 2024, we visited Peddapalli District because we had taken a Corporate there for infrastructure ramp up of a KGBV (a State residential girls school / Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya). In a conversation with the District Collector, Mr. Sree Harsha, IAS, we learnt that students (class 5 to 10) there, were keen on an industry visit. Enter Mr. Joginder Tanikella, CEO, T-Works. All of us came together on Children’s Day (Nov 14) and ensured all those 40 kids visited T-Works, Hyd. The kids attended workshops on IoT (Internet of Things), Basic Electronics and Ceramics hand-building. It was a celebration of creativity and innovation, giving students a glimpse into the world of prototyping. By fostering this maker mindset in our young minds across Telangana, we are nurturing future innovators in India. We at T-SIG continue to bridge entities - because connecting people creates exponential value.

Lahari was selected through a rigorous interview process emphasizing her exceptional communication skills, innovative solutions for pressing United Nations issues, and profound passion for global citizenship. Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Biological E, Lahari had the extraordinary opportunity to connect with over 700 delegates from 36 nations. Good Universe (NGO) was another key partner who made Lahari's dream come true. As the sole representative from Telangana, she showcased her commitment to tackle critical global issues. Through her impassioned speech at the conference, she raised awareness about human trafficking, migration, and smuggling. Her performance earned her the prestigious Honorable Mention Award from the United Nations. At T-SIG, we believe in empowering youth like Lahari through support from various sectors. Congratulations, Lahari! P.S. Lahari, a student at IIIT Basra, Nizamabad, met Ms. Divya Devarajan, IAS, at Praja Bhavan in August 2024, seeking educational assistance.
