At their annual press conference last month, the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) and the Länderarbeitsgemeinschaft Verbraucherschutz (LAV) presented their key findings in food safety for 2024, based on samples collected in Germany. The report revealed that over 8% of cold-smoked salmon samples tested positive for Listeria, posing serious risks. ⚠️ Additionally, some vegan cheese alternatives were found to contain harmful bacteria. 🧀🌱 Dried fruits such as dates, plums, and unsulfured apricots presented elevated levels of acrylamide, a substance associated with potential health risks. High concentrations of cadmium, lead, arsenic, copper, iodine, and PFAS were also detected in dried algae, with several samples exceeding guideline values. In contrast, all of the tested finger paints successfully met the legal safety requirements. 🖐️🎨️ These findings underline the importance of our services to ensure the highest standards in food testing and safety, helping to protect consumers and support businesses in meeting regulatory requirements. 🔬 For further advice, get in touch with us: 📧 food@tentamus.com

⚠️ #FoodFraud is a growing challenge in the area of food safety. It involves the deliberate deception of consumers through the manipulation, adulteration or false declaration of products in order to gain financial benefits. 🦑 In the case of #Tuna, illegal practices like dyeing tuna with unauthorized substances to make it appear fresher, deceiving consumers and posing health risks might be a serious concern. Common #CannedTuna species include Skipjack, Yellowfin, and Albacore, though mislabeling or mixing with lower-quality species is common. Food fraud, involving the manipulation or misrepresentation of products for financial gain, is a significant issue in fish and meat, necessitating strict controls and modern analytical methods. 🔬 To combat food fraud, lifeprint GmbH employs real-time PCR, a precise DNA detection method ideal for identifying tuna in processed products like canned tuna. This technique ensures high sensitivity and specificity, detecting even minute DNA amounts and boosting consumer confidence in #FoodSafety. Furthermore, we offer molecular analysis services such as PCR, ELISA, and sequencing, backed by rigorous quality controls and ISO accreditation - We make sure that there is real tuna in canned tuna. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has reaffirmed the safety of silica (E 551) as a food additive for all population groups, including infants under 16 weeks. Widely used in powdered foods like spices 🌶️ and milk powder 🍼, silica prevents clumping, ensuring better product handling and storage. EFSA’s review focused on synthetic amorphous silica (SAS), examining nanoparticle concerns. 🔬 The findings revealed that these particles naturally clump into larger ones when used in food, posing no safety risks at current usage levels. Additionally, EFSA found no genotoxic risks, confirming silica’s safety. ✅ First approved in the 1960s, silica remains a key additive due to its stability and minimal absorption by the body. It is largely excreted after consumption, making it suitable for various applications in the food industry. 🏭 As a reliable anti-caking agent, silica contributes to efficient and sustainable food production. At Tentamus, we offer comprehensive testing services to ensure the safety, quality, and compliance of your food additives. Our advanced laboratories are equipped to analyze silica (E 551) and other additives, addressing regulatory requirements and providing detailed assessments for your products. 🍙 Dried seaweed refers to algae harvested from the sea, cleaned, and subsequently dried to extend their shelf life. In Asian cuisine, dried seaweed is commonly used in sushi, soups, salads, and broths. Dried seaweed is rich in nutrients - such as: 🟢 Vitamins 🟢 Minerals, e.g. iodine, which is crucial for the function of the thyroid gland and hormone regulation However, due to its ability to absorb contaminants like heavy metals from its environment, regular monitoring of #DriedSeaweed is essential to ensure quality and safety. ⚠️ According to the monitoring conducted in 2023 by the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and #FoodSafety, 10% of the monitored samples contained lead levels exceeding 0.4 mg/kg, cadmium above 3.3 mg/kg, and copper above 8.52 mg/kg. Additionally, 10% showed arsenic levels higher than 37.6 mg/kg. 🇪🇺 In the European Union, the legal maximum levels for heavy metals in food are defined by Regulation (EC) No. 1881/2006. For dried seaweed for use in food supplements, a maximum content of 3.0 mg/kg of cadmium of dry matter applies. There are currently no specific maximum levels for lead, copper and arsenic in dried seaweed. However, the introduction of a legal maximum level is being discussed and is the subject of current consultations on consumer health protection. 🏷️ Out of 82 #Seaweed samples analyzed, 75 had iodine levels exceeding 20 mg per kilogram of dry mass, requiring a warning label about potential thyroid function issues from excessive iodine intake. However, 10 of these 75 samples lacked the mandatory warning label. 🔬 Our #Laboratories make sure that limit values for dried seaweed are not exceeded and that its content and labeling comply with the applicable legal requirements. We carry out all necessary analyses and ensure rapid order processing. 📧 Contact us for more information: food@tentamus.com
