AbstractAbstract
[en] To study the nuclear properties of unknown neutron deficient actinide isotopes which decay mainly via orbital electron capture (EC), we have developed a composite system consisting of a gas-jet transport apparatus and a thermal ion-source at the JAERI-ISOL. With this system, search for 236Am produced in the 235U(6Li, 5n) reaction has been performed. Pu KX-rays associated with the EC decay of 236Am are observed at the mass-236 fraction. The half-life of 236Am is evaluated to be 4.4min. The outline of the gas-jet coupled JAERI-ISOL system and typical performance are given. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The workshop on the nuclear sciences of the heaviest elements took place on February 22-23, 2001 at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), Tokai. Approximately 35 scientists and 10 graduate students participated in the workshop which was organized by the Advanced Science Research Center, JAERI. This workshop is the continuation of the First Workshop on the Nuclear Sciences of the Heaviest Elements held in Tokai during July 1999. The workshop covered a wide spectrum of nuclear chemistry and physics related to the transactinide elements. The subjects in the workshop were classified into; (1) reviews of experimental results of the transactinide chemistry, (2) theoretical approaches to the chemistry of heavy elements, (3) recent topics of heavy element chemistry, (4) synthesis of heavy elements, and (5) related subjects on heavy element research. The 16 of the presented papers are indexed individually. (J.P.N.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A new neutron-rich isotope 166Tb produced in 16 MeV proton-induced fission of 238U has been identified using the JAERI on-line isotope separator (JAERI-ISOL) coupled to a gas-jet transport system. Dy KX-rays and γ rays originating from the decay of 166Tb were found in both mass-166 and 182 fractions, where the 166Tb nuclides were mass-separated as elemental ions 166Tb+ and monoxide ions 166TbO+, respectively. The half-life of 166Tb has been determined as 21 ± 6 s, which is much shorter than theoretical predictions. A decay scheme of 166Tb has been proposed and a probable spin assignment for the 166Tb ground state has been discussed. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Isotope separation on-line (ISOL) with unambiguous mass identification and rapid separation is a powerful method for study of short-lived trans-plutonium isotopes. So far, we installed a gas-jet coupled thermal ion source in the JAEA-ISOL, and neutron-deficient trans-plutonium isotopes included the new isotopes 233Am, 237Cm and 241Bk, were successfully mass-separated and these decay properties were studied. To extent this research activities in the region of other trans-plutonium isotopes, we have been studied a thick target ion-source technique for increment separation yield of an isotope of interest. Recently, we successfully mass-separated 239Am isotope produced in the heavy-ion fusion evaporation reaction with the intensity of 1.3 x 103 atoms/s from thick uranium target. The observed beam intensity of 239Am isotope is about 10 times higher than that expected with the gas-jet coupled thermal ion source system. (author)
