For a world without hunger

نبذة عنا

Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is one of the largest private aid organizations in Germany with no political or religious affiliations, founded in 1962 under the umbrella of the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). Welthungerhilfe’s (WHH’s) vision is a world without hunger. In order to work towards this goal, we provide emergency relief as well as long-term development aid to people in need. With 407 international projects in 2016, we could support communities in 39 countries. The fundamental principle of Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is help for self-help: together with partner’s organizations, we strengthen structures from the bottom up and ensure success of our project work in the long-term. In line with Core Humanitarian Standards, people in need receive assistance independent of political and religious affiliations, age, gender, race, color, ethnicity, disability or health status. Since 2014, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is officially registered in Northern Iraq where we work closely with national and local authorities as well as bodies of the United Nations to provide assistance to communities affected after the so called Islamic State (IS) took over large parts of Northern Iraq in 2014. Initially, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) distributed food parcels and provided winterization assistance in Dohuk governorate and Erbil. Having moved on to a more comprehensive approach, we currently focus on providing humanitarian and rehabilitation assistance for IDPs, returnees and host communities in Northern Ninawa and accessible areas around Mosul. Welthungerhilfe’s (WHH’s) vision is a world without hunger. In order to work towards this goal, we provide emergency relief as well as long-term development aid to people in need. Welthungerhilfe (WHH) in Iraq supports Internally Displaced People (IDPs), refugees and host communities by providing humanitarian and rehabilitation assistance.

Access to Clean Water in Al-Khizifi Village! 💧☀️ Welthungerhilfe, with support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has rehabilitated a solar-powered Reverse Osmosis (RO) water station in Al-Khizifi village, Tikrit, Salah Al-Din. Before: ✖️The station, built in 2008, stopped functioning properly by 2012. ✖️Families struggled to access clean water. ✖️Many relied on expensive, hard-to-transport water or unsafe tanker trucks. ✖️Lack of clean water led to illnesses, especially among children. ✖️Even the local elementary school had no reliable water supply. In 2024: 🔍 Welthungerhilfe conducted a technical assessment of the station in collaboration with the Directorate of Water. 🗣️ We listened to the community’s urgent need for clean, safe drinking water. Now: ✅ The Reverse Osmosis equipment and station are fully rehabilitated. ✅ The generator was replaced with solar power—clean energy for clean water! ☀️ ✅ Through connecting the water station to the elementary school, now students and teachers have access to drinking water! These #WASH initiatives are part of the Strengthening Food Security for Women and Vulnerable IDPs, Returnees, Refugees, and Host Communities in Ninewa and Salah Al-Din project 🌱 Together, we’re building stronger, #healthier communities with #access to cleaning water 💧🚰 Music credits: Munir Bashir and his quartet Iraqui Dabka. #CleanWater #SolarEnergy #Iraq #SustainableDevelopment #Welthungerhilfe #ZeroHunger💧

  • 💧As access to drinking #water remains as one of our primary sectors of focus in Iraq, In Salah Al-Din, Welthungerhilfe is #rehabilitating several water stations, including the Banat Al-Hassan water station in Tikrit. 🚰 Thanks to the hard work of Cash-for-Work participants from the Samarra community, this initiative will benefit 200 households, ensuring better access to a #reliable source of drinking water. 🚰Our team, in coordination with the Salah Al-Din Directorate of Water, conducted technical assessments on four water stations in Samarra. The focus was on identifying and addressing damages in mechanical and electrical systems, pumps, filters, sedimentation tanks, and other critical areas. 💧Throughout the ongoing rehabilitation, Cash-for-Work participants are painting filters and tanks, gardening, and cleaning the station sites. These #WASH initiatives are part of the Strengthening Food Security for Women and Vulnerable IDPs, Returnees, Refugees, and Host Communities in Ninewa and Salah Al-Din project, funded by Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) 🌱 Together, we’re building stronger, #healthier communities with #access to cleaning water 💧🚰 #CleanWater #CommunityResilience #CashForWork #WASH #FoodSecurity #welthungerhilfe #Iraq #SalahAlDin

  • In the plains of Sinuni, beside the still mountains of #Sinjar, lies a village with the name of Qaisa, where Khalida, one of the few young and female #beekeepers, continues her #beekeeping practice. 🐝   Beekeeping in #Iraq date back 8,000 years. In the Sumerian Era, writings on #bees were found on clay tablets older than 4,000 years B.C. 🍯 Honey, in the history of Iraq, had its own significance; it was used to treat skin infections and ulcers. The #babylonians were also aware of the benefits of honey and its ability to treat diseases.   While beekeeping is an ancient custom in Iraq, practiced by many, it is not common among #Yazidi females in Sinjar, making Khalida one of the few women in the area to practice beekeeping.   Khalida, with joy in her heart, picked up beekeeping as a child from her father, Khider, who would ask her to help him around. This time-to-time support eventually became Khalida’s passion, leading her to start beekeeping.   “My father was my mentor. From him, I learned how to take care of bees,” said Khalida. She continued, “Beekeeping wasn’t particularly my dream, but I learned to love it with practice. It was a way for me and my father to connect. We became friends along the way. Even if I struggle now, he supports me.”   Khalida soon got herself 15 bee boxes 🐝, but her excitement did not last long as she soon realized her bees were passing due to varroa mites.   “My bees passed. I was very sad, and I had unpleasant feelings,” said Khalida.   Her passion soon sparked again when Welthungerhilfe Iraq, in cooperation with UNDP Iraq implemented the project Supporting the Recovery of the Agriculture Sector in Sinjar and Tal-Afar Districts, Ninewa Governorate, Iraq, with funding from Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) provided through KfW. Khalida got the chance to receive training sessions and a grant to restart her beekeeping work.   “When I received the grant, I felt content and supported,” said Khalida.   The grant supported Khalida in beginning again by helping her buy necessary safety equipment as well as bee boxes.   “Beekeeping does not feel like a chore to me. It is my passion and source of income,” said Khalida. She added, “I believe that beekeeping is a practice that can be carried out and enjoyed by both males and females.”   As much as Khalida is passionate about beekeeping, it saddens her that there are not more young females who share her interest.   Hence, Khalida wants to not only continue her beekeeping and expand her work; she also dreams of being a changemaker by educating, informing, and bringing awareness to her community about beekeeping, especially as a practice for young females. 🌟🐝 #Beekeeping #Iraq #Welthungerhilfe #Zerohunger

  • Siham lives only five hundred meters away from the #Tigris River. As the river flows, her life of #farming and #livestock continues alongside Amsha and Malika, her sisters, and Yaseer and Yasir, her brothers. Together, they’ve built a life of farming—a path they inherited from their parents—planting okra, beans, vegetables, and alfalfa. In 2014, Siham and her siblings were greatly affected by ISIL. They took their animals and left Tikrit, Salah Al-Din, living in Hawija for three years. “During those years, our animals helped us survive. We sold milk, cheese, and ghee,” said Siham. What awaited them upon their return to Albu-Ajeel village was heartbreaking. Seeing their farm tools stolen and destroyed was devastating, and the lack of water only exacerbated the situation as they saw their once-green land completely #dried up. “Looking at the Tigris is a bittersweet sight,” said Siham. She added, “It breaks my heart to see the river dry up in the summer.” To restart farming, Siham and her siblings took refuge in customary practices, using a generator to pump #water into their land. Over time, however, Siham realized that this was not a sustainable practice. Welthungerhilfe Iraq , with financial support from Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the project Strengthening Food Security of Women and Vulnerable Internally Displaced Persons, Returnees, Refugees, and Host Communities in Ninewa and Salah Al-Din, supported Siham and her siblings with a #solar power panel, twenty-two different seed types, and a drip irrigation system. Siham’s heart filled with joy as she saw their farm transition to using clean energy to pump water to their farm and animals. It proved to be an efficient and less costly solution. “We are happy that we no longer use our noisy, expensive generators,” Siham said, “and the solar power has brought peace, stability, and savings.” The sisters, alongside their brothers, can now grow sesame, okra, cucumbers, peppers, and more. They always have access to fresh vegetables, which also serve as a source of income. Their work sustains not only themselves but also four families who depend on the land. Despite all the difficulties they have faced and the sacrifices they have made, the Siham and her siblings remain #hopeful. They continue to work daily, from 6 a.m. until late evening, to achieve their #dream of acquiring agricultural machines to support their efforts and better provide for the four families who rely on them. #Cleanenergy #Resilience #Welthungerhilfe #Bmz
