Rural roads are a lifeline for millions of Yemenis, supporting agricultural development, fishing, trade, and industry. Since its inception in 2001, Rural Access Program (RAP) has been working to break isolation and improve the living conditions of rural populations. In 2022, RAP has implemented 145 projects across 17 governorates, with a total cost of $535 million, constructing 3,250 kilometres of roads and creating over four million job opportunities, benefiting approximately three million people. We continue to strive towards the vision of Rural Access Program (RAP) to achieve a safe and sustainable road network, contributing to the improvement of millions of Yemeni lives. Due to on-going rains across the country, our emergency preparedness and response teams continue to monitor the areas at risk. Today’s rainfall in Kasese led to an increase in the volume of water for the 2 the rivers of Nyamwamba & Mubuku. This has also led to the destruction of infrastructure such as roads and bridges in the catchment area(s). In the past weeks, Myanmar has been faced with continuous waves of flooding starting from northern Myanmar, extending then southwards towards the central and lower parts of the country. Other ongoing situations exacerbated the humanitarian needs in certain affected areas but Myanmar Red Cross Society remain responding in a safe and coordinated way. Throughout the evolution of events, MRCS continue mobilising immediate lifesaving needs and services such as administration of first aid, and provision of food and water, along with core services such as the provision of hygiene and sanitation kits and key messages, while supporting governments efforts as auxiliary, for safe evacuations of vulnerable and affected communities. Findings from the MRCS's selected branch-level Damage Assessment and Needs Assessment (DANA) and the assessment reports from local authorities have identified the ongoing immediate needs of drinking water, food, hygiene items, kitchen sets, weather-appropriate clothes, and healthcare services. With the humanitarian needs remaining high in parts of Myanmar due to this Orange level emergency, the IFRC-DREF has just released CHF 825,215 towards MRCS’ lifesaving flood relief and early recovery efforts. The overall objective of this emergency operation is to meet the immediate humanitarian needs of 15,000 people affected by floods in Kayin, Bago (East & West), Yangon, Ayeyarwady, Mon and Tanintharyi states / regions through the provision essential household items, multi-purpose cash grants, and actions in WASH and health. Can you imagine if you had to worry about your toilet at home collapsing… For thousands of refugees in the Rhino camp settlement in Northwest Nile, Uganda, this is a harsh reality. Traditional latrines, built from reeds, mud, and tarpaulin, often collapse and need constant rebuilding. Termites are a big problem too, making a basic need like sanitation a continuous source of stress. But thanks to support from the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany, Malteser International is changing that narrative by introducing dome-shaped slab toilets to 2,200 households—strong, durable, and built to last. These slabs, crafted from a mix of cement, sand, and mesh, can hold up to 500 kilograms, ensuring that residents like Edna Tumalu, a South Sudanese refugee, no longer have to fear their latrine collapsing. Edna, who has lived in the camp for seven years, knows the difference this makes. With a dome-shaped slab toilet, her family can now experience a sense of stability, safety, and dignity in something as simple, yet as essential, as sanitation.
