Last Friday, Joana Faggin joined 📚 VTB Study Day 2024: EU Deforestation Regulation 🌳, an in-depth afternoon organized by the Dutch Tropical Forest Association (Vereniging Tropische Bossen). The EMMA4EU project was showcased by one of our partners, Jelle Behagel (WUR), who led discussions about the EUDR's recently approved one-year delay and implementation challenges, emphasizing the focus of the regulation on legality, traceability, and corporate responsibility. Several concerns about the setup and requirements of the regulation were raised by event participants. Among them, the lack of integration with existing initiatives in producing countries, the oversight of specific land ownership systems and local traditional governance, and the disproportionate benefit its stringent requirements might represent for large corporations, with the potential to worsen issues like monoculture, land conflicts, and market concentration. #EUDR #LandRights #CorporateResponsibility #Deforestation #sustainability #policy

𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗢𝗡 𝗘𝗨𝗗𝗥 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 On Thursday, November 14th, the European Parliament voted to postpone the 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (#𝐄𝐔𝐃𝐑) application date by one year and approved several amendments. ✅ Key amendments: 🔹 A "No-risk" category was added to the risk classification system. Relevant products from no-risk countries would not be subject to due diligence. 🔹 The required information exchange platform and benchmarking system must now be fully operational six months before the regulation’s new start dates. ❗ #EMMA4EU acknowledges and shares concerns regarding the introduction of the "no-risk" category in the countries' risk classification system. This amendment raises worries about being perceived as a protectionist measure, which could be challenged by the WTO, potentially causing bureaucratic delays. ❗ In addition, there are significant concerns about the regulation's effectiveness and potential unintended consequences, such as encouraging the smuggling of commodities from high-risk to "no-risk" countries and failing to adequately address forest degradation in countries classified as "no-risk." 💡 The one-year postponement is a chance to prepare for full implementation and avoid further delays. The EMMA4EU project has identified key training needs for students and professionals to tackle these challenges. You can read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dr8Q3t_Q

The aim was to test the feasibility of implementing the new legislation and identify the challenges in compliance that still needed to be addressed. The 10 lessons learned from this process serve to support soy supply chain partners in their preparation for achieving full compliance with EUDR within the stipulated time frame. 👏 ⚠️𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁: although issues remain, the Brazilian soy sector is already very well prepared to meet the demands of EUDR, and its experience can serve as a reference for other commodities and other exporting countries.
