🔬 According to a new study conducted in the laboratories at Humanitas Research, the progression of heart failure is driven by an autoimmune reaction: the discovery could open up new strategies to treat one of the most common cardiovascular diseases. The study, published in Circulation Research was led by Prof. Marinos Kallikourdis – Group Leader of the Adaptive Immunity Lab, with Prof. Gianluigi Condorelli – Director of the Research Program in Cardiovascular Medicine and Head of the Cardio Center at Humanitas Research Hospital. Among the first authors Marco Cremonesi, Arianna Felicetta and Elisa Martini. The researchers identified several molecules, produced by the stressed heart, that initiate the autoimmune response and used them to create a prototype tolerising vaccine. Tested in an experimental model of the disease, the vaccine was able to dampen the immune response and to reduce inflammation in the heart. Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting a joint seminar featuring two esteemed researchers and genomics experts from Human Technopole and Karolinska Institutet: 🗣️ Nicola Crosetto shared fascinating insights into single-cell genomics approaches to dissect intratumor genetic heterogeneity. 🗣️ Magda Bienko delivered an inspiring talk on the role of intronic RNAs in shaping genome architecture of neurons. The sessions, introduced by Enrico Lugli, offered a fantastic platform for our researchers and PhD students to exchange ideas and explore cutting-edge methodologies in the genomics field. Collaborative events like this underscore the importance of cross-institutional partnerships in advancing science and inspiring the next generation of researchers. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved for making this seminar such a success! #HumanitasResearch #Hunimed #PhDstudents #Genomics #ResearchInnovation

🔬 A recent study published in Cell Host & Microbe, found that #antibiotic treatment during gestation could contribute, via breast milk, to a higher risk of intestinal infections and bacterial translocation from the gut into the bloodstream in newborns, potentially leading to sepsis. The study was led by Prof. Maria Rescigno – Vice Rector for Research at Humanitas University and Deputy Scientific Director for Basic Research at Humanitas Research Hospital, in collaboration with Dr. Carlo Pietrasanta – researcher at Università degli Studi di Milano and physician in Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care at Ospedale Policlinico di Milano. Although restricted to preclinical models, the study results could suggest new strategies to monitor and protect newborns, especially preemies, from the unwanted effects of antibiotics. We were glad to host the #GRADE Workshop for Planetary Health at Humanitas University last week. Experts from renowned institutions around the globe met at our campus to discuss the critical intersection of human health, healthcare practices and the health of our planet. The workshop, led by Prof. Thomas Piggott from McMaster University, in collaboration with the Clinical Epidemiology and Research Center directed by Prof. Holger Schünemann, highlighted the role of health technology and guideline assessments in supporting human health while acknowledging the environmental impacts of healthcare. Sustainable practices in health are more important than ever, since we know that human health, animal health, and the planet’s health are inextricably linked. Topics covered included the use of single-use plastics, carbon emissions from transport and ways to promote environmentally conscious healthcare interventions 💡🌿 Thank you to everyone who joined us, asked thought-provoking questions, and contributed to this important conversation. Together, we're working toward a healthier planet 🌎 #HumanitasResearch #PlanetaryHealth #SustainableHealthcare #GRADE #PublicHealth

🧬🔬 Exciting breakthrough in #GeneticResearch: a new study highlights how anomalies in DNA sequences can have different effects depending on their positioning with respect to chromatine folding. Published in Genome Medicine and led by Dr. Giampaolo Trivellin – Neuroendocrinology Research Coordinator at the Translational Endocrinology Laboratory and Assistant Professor at Humanitas University, the research focuses on the GPR101 gene, which is linked to a rare form of pituitary gigantism, revealing that not all duplications lead to the same outcomes. Done in collaboration with researchers Martin Franke from the Andalusian Center for Developmental Biology (CABD) CSIC-UPO-JA in Seville, and Adrian Daly from the University Hospital Center in Liège (Endo-ERN - European Reference Network), and thanks to the support of Fondazione Telethon, this study sheds new light on the role of DNA's three-dimensional structure in disease expression. It opens new doors for more accurate diagnosis and personalised treatments for those affected by rare genetic conditions.
