🔋 EU-funded projects drive sustainable solutions for raw material security The EU’s shift to a low-carbon, digital future hinges on a secure supply of critical raw materials (CRMs), which are vital for the manufacture of products from electric vehicle batteries to medical devices. However, Europe’s dependency on global imports poses significant risks. In response, the EU has enacted the Critical Raw Materials Act to strengthen its CRM value chain while promoting circularity and environmental sustainability. The recent CORDIS Results Pack highlights 10 #EUfunded projects that are developing innovative, sustainable approaches to CRM processing and recycling. These projects are exploring cleaner, more efficient methods to recover valuable materials from by-products, contributing to waste reduction and enhanced recycling of resources like lithium and rare earth elements. 🔷 Last week, SEArcularMINE project coordinator Andrea Cipollina was invited to present at the Regional Meeting for the Implementation of Sustainable Desalination and Application of State of Art Technologies, an event organized by the UN Environment Programme, Mediterranean Action Plan. 💡 By all accounts, the meeting was very successful. SEArcularMINE's project results were highly appreciated by countries adopting #desalination in their water integrated supply systems within the #Mediterranean region. Among the new guidelines for sustainable desalination, the team added the need to evaluate the option of #BrineValorization for resource recovery in new desalination plants, as an effective measure within the brine management strategies 👏 #H2020 #Research #Innovation

🌟 #ResearcherSpotlight 🌟 👨🔬 Víctor Vallès Nebot is a dedicated researcher at the R2EM group within the Chemical Engineering Department at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, where he is also finalizing his PhD. His research focuses on the recovery of valuable elements from aqueous waste streams. 🔷 Within the SEArcularMINE project, he has played a crucial role in recovering #boron and other #traceelements from bitterns using sorption processes. His research involved identifying sorbents with high affinity and selectivity for the target elements, using these sorbents in packed-bed columns to retain and subsequently elute the elements with acid flushing. This process enabled the concentration and recovery of the targeted elements through precipitation and crystallization methods.
