🍺 Turning Beer Waste into Building Materials 🚀 German startup HopfON, based in Munich, transforms hop waste—leftover biomass from beer production—into sustainable building materials like acoustic panels and thermal insulation. This innovation addresses dual challenges: reducing agricultural and construction waste. ♻️ The beer industry produces up to 7.7 pounds of waste for every 2.2 pounds of usable hops, while construction generates a third of EU waste. HopfON’s closed-loop system allows returned materials to be recycled, minimizing landfill contributions. 🚀 Circular City Actions Framework: Bringing the circular economy to every city 🚀 📝 The Circular City Actions Framework by ICLEI LOCAL GOVERNMENTS FOR SUST, Circle Economy, Metabolic, and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation helps cities transition from linear to circular economies through five strategies: Rethink, Regenerate, Reduce, Reuse, and Recover. These approaches aim to redesign systems, harmonize with nature, minimize resource use, extend product lifespans, and recover materials efficiently. 🎯 Adopting the framework allows cities to enhance resource efficiency, cut emissions, protect biodiversity, and promote social equity, supporting the Sustainable Development Goals. 🚀 The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) recently entered into force with the aim of making sustainable products the norm. 📝 In this report, the relevance of a number of product groups and horizontal requirements for potential action under ESPR was evaluated on the basis of several parameters: environmental impacts and improvement potential, market relevance, policy coverage in the EU, cost reflections, and contribution towards an EU Open Strategic Autonomy. 💡 This report represents the JRC’s final analysis of new product priorities for the ESPR. However, the results illustrated are not final decisions: they do not bind the Commission, and are without prejudice to what may ultimately be prioritised for first action under ESPR, included in the first ESPR Working Plan, or undertaken under other EU policy frameworks. 🌱 Do you want to find out more on Ecodesign?
