About us

UNDER THE SHADE OF ACACIA TREE WE CRAFTED OUR INSPIRATION AND OUR MOVEMENT IS ROOTED IN OUR INDIGENOUS AFRICAN CONCEPT OF COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPY The Acacia tree is deeply rooted in the spiritual and cultural fabric of African societies, symbolizing regeneration, perseverance, and integrity. Its importance goes beyond its physical presence; it represents a tool for environmental peacebuilding that draws from indigenous knowledge. Renowned for its drought resistance, the Acacia tree plays a pivotal role in climate change adaptation and mitigation, particularly in arid regions where water scarcity is a constant challenge. This tree not only survives but thrives, reflecting its inherent strength and determination. In many African traditions, the Acacia is also seen as a guardian spirit, offering protection, wisdom, and guidance to those who seek shelter beneath its shade. INTEGRATING PEACE-BUILDING INTO ENVIRONMENTAL RESILIENCE At the heart of our mission is the belief that environmental resilience and peace-building are deeply interconnected. The protection and restoration of natural resources such as water, land, and forests can help reduce conflicts that arise from competition over scarce resources. By promoting sustainable land management and water conservation techniques, we help communities mitigate the risks of environmental degradation, while fostering cooperation and peace. The Acacia Dialogue Center stands as a beacon for such efforts—where community-driven, locally-owned peace-building and environmental initiatives can help create more resilient, just, and peaceful societies. WHAT DO WE STAND FOR: #ShiftTheNarrative #ShiftThePower Our core belief lies in community-led development. We advocate for shifting the power from external actors to local communities because not only is it the right thing to do, it is also the most effective way to achieve long-lasting and impactful change.

Happy to announce the launch of our World Bank paper written jointly with my fellow development practitioners Gael R., Zubair Bhatti and I . Our paper adds to the debate on the complex relationships between administrative capacity, service delivery, political processes, and legitimacy - critical state-building questions. We argue that a social contract approach can better explain why state legitimacy may not necessarily improve despite dramatic improvements in service delivery. Our paper advocates that effective donor engagement in FCV countries, requires humility and realism about what international actors can achieve. It also suggests ideas for doing things differently (considering the necessary humility with ‘innovative’ options). Acacia Dialogue Center

  • 🕊️ Today is Peace, Relief, and Recovery Day at #COP29 – a crucial moment to recognize that climate action and peace go hand in hand. That’s why we are calling for climate action to be conflict-sensitive and for peace to be a priority at the ongoing COP and upcoming COPs. We, as part of the Peace@COP collective, have put together a policy paper providing recommendations for involving peace in climate action negotiations. Discover our recommendations for mitigating military environmental and climate impacts, fostering community engagement in climate programs, allocating loss and damage funds to vulnerable communities, and including youth in climate and peacebuilding efforts, as well as how conflict sensitivity can be integrated into climate initiatives and how we can move toward a Green Transition in conflict-affected areas.👇 🔗 Read our policy brief at: https://lnkd.in/d5PNS7HU #PeaceAtCOP

  • The Common Principles for Effective Climate Finance and Action for Relief, Recovery, and Peace were developed by a global community of experts, practitioners, and policy-makers, in collaboration with actors at the local level. The principles emphasise the importance of local ownership and leadership in climate action. By embedding the voices of women, indigenous groups, youth, and other affected communities from start to finish, we don’t just create projects; we build sustainable futures driven by the people most impacted. 🌱 Now is the time to ensure that climate finance reaches the people and places who need it most. I had the privilege of presenting on 'The Nexus of Environment, Climate, Peace, and Security' at the 2nd Annual Peace Conference organized by Puntland Development Research Centre (PDRC) in Garowe, Somalia. It was essential to emphasize the link between climate change and conflict, particularly in the Horn of Africa, where mitigation and adaptation efforts remain weak and insufficient. It was an honor to represent Acacia Dialogue Center (ADC) at this impactful and thought-provoking conference. Many thanks to PDRC for hosting such a valuable event and bringing together an outstanding group of experts. The insights and discussions were truly enriching. #APC2024
