About us
Adeso is a pioneering African social enterprise with global influence. Rooted in Africa for over 30 years, we are working toward a decolonised world where people thrive through their own resourcefulness and tenacity. Adeso is part of a global movement to shift power to local leaders who are closest to the problem and, by consequence, closest to the solution. We are working with allies all over the world to reimagine and build a better system that is based on the principles of solidarity, humility, self-determination, and equality. We are committed to this work. Committed to proving it is possible. Ready to partner, ready to overcome barriers, and ready to evolve to create a blueprint for change. Adeso is a registered non-profit organisation in Kenya and Somalia, and is fiscally sponsored in the USA as a 501(c)3 non-profit organisation by Myriad USA (EIN582277856).

Starting the new year with the #Pledge core/dream team of Sidhee Patel Blessing Osagie Christopher Emmanuel Amani and Isabella Jean, and we asked ourselves (HT Mohammed Ali): If 2025 were the most amazing year ever (for the Pledge), what stories will we be telling at the end of the year? The answers included: When we talk to civil society organisations in the south, they will believe in the Pledge; tangible examples of willingness to cede decision-making power to locally led orgs; signatories compliant with their commitments, and integrating feedback from the southern led assessments into their work; real sustained partnerships show momentum towards 2030; pledge supporters understand how they can use the pledges to hold signatories to account. What will you add to this ambition?
🌟 Welcome to 2025! A New Year, New Opportunities!🌟 As we step into this new chapter, we want to take a moment to thank the #PledgeforChange community for your commitment and shared vision throughout 2024. Now, we look forward to 2025 with renewed energy and purpose! We trust that you aim to go further—honoring your pledges, strengthening partnerships and amplifying your collective impact for a more just, equitable and sustainable world. Let’s keep building on our shared values, holding each other accountable and inspiring positive change. We would love to know what you have been up to! Please feel free to share your learnings, achievements and efforts. We look forward to engaging each other in exciting updates, events and opportunities to share in! A Restorative Pause for Adeso: After a very productive year for our staff alongside a difficult year for the world at large, Adeso will be closing our offices through January 5th to allow time for rest and recharging. We would like to thank all our staff and partners for working with us to advance our work implementing concrete development solutions, decolonizing aid and philanthropy, and advocating for locally-led leadership in 2024. We look forward to an equally productive 2025 at Adeso, and to the possibility of a better future for those suffering under the weight of poverty and oppression. We wish you a prosperous New Year! 💙

Our documentary is entered for an award. It has already won the Sunrise Award at the Films for a Better World in Munich. It is both gentle and hard hitting as we have tried to show the dignity of poor people in India and Africa, how their lives can be transformed by locally led development, the questionable state of how a $250bn aid industry is organised. Please vote and spread the word.
Please vote for us! Our documentary "We Don't Do Charity" is entered for this year's Smiley Charity Film Awards! We need YOUR help to get to the judging stage - only those films with the most votes will get into the finals so we're depending on you! And yes, if you haven't seen the film yet you can now watch it completely free until voting ends on January 29, 2025, so get watching and voting! https://lnkd.in/dddAPBKY Enjoy and thank you! #charityfilmawards #cfa25 Charles Kojo Vandyck Arbie Baguios Alan Braithwaite Amanda Campbell Issifu Sulemana Antoine Le Guennec Brian Donaldson Hannah Clarke Jonathan Glennie Nsimire Aston Christie Peacock CBE Ben Gori Anshu Gupta

“All human beings want dignified employment, they want a way to earn a living for themselves and their families. Nobody wants handouts, it’s not in human nature, in my opinion, to just sit there and wait for handouts from the west or from your government…” says Adeso’s Executive Director Degan Ali in We Don’t Do Charity. 💙 Watch the full session: We Don't Do Charity Documentary Screening & Panel Discussion: https://lnkd.in/dVmSigWq 🗣️ We Don’t Do Charity is a short thought-provoking documentary hosted by Catalyst 2030 that is keen on dissecting and evaluating current systems of aid and how we can shift the power to grow locally led development in a sustainable way. The film featured several local organisations that empower their local communities that explained that their driving force comes from a deep desire to change destitute living conditions of their communities. It insists that the role of international aid needs to be redefined so that its beneficiaries do not end up becoming victims of charity. However it also emphasises the importance of documenting local development alternatives and show that they work. The 30 min think piece was followed by an intricate panel discussion with Alan Braithwaite, Executive Producer of We Don’t Do Charity, Anshu Gupta from Goonj, Nkunzurwanda Olivier from Refugee Innovation Centre and Ayesha F. from Comic Relief.

🌎Celebrating the Launch of the Permanent Latin American Forum for the Decolonization of Cooperation ✨ Earlier this month, over 200 participants—including social organizations, academics, INGOs, and donors from 21 countries—came together to launch the Permanent Latin American Forum for the Decolonization of Cooperation. This landmark initiative, sparked powerful dialogue and collective action toward a decolonized future. We are grateful to the #PledgeSignatories who were able to attend and we kindly ask INGOs to make greater resources available to support the movement. We are thrilled to see Acápacá and Asier Hernando Malax-Echevarria who is a part of the Pledge Compass Group leading the Forum's secretariat. The energy, solidarity, and commitment shown by all participants were truly inspiring. A special moment was when Sofia Sprechmann Sineiro, Co-Chair of the Pledge Steering Group, with the support of regional social movements, read the Forum’s declaration. This Forum represents a milestone in reshaping global cooperation to be truly inclusive and equitable Kate Moger 📽 Watch the highlights: (https://lnkd.in/dyCtCqR5) #PledgeForChange #EquitablePartnerships #AuthenticStorytelling #DecolonizeAid
