We are excited to announce the recent publication of a study by our National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership (NNPHL) in the Journal of International Humanitarian Action, titled "Understanding leadership challenges faced by humanitarian aid workers: insights from the experiences of NNPHL training participants. The Regional Humanitarian Partnership Week (RHPW) has officially begun in Bangkok, Thailand bringing together over 350 civil society members and humanitarian practitioners from 59 countries across the world. Our theme "Sparking Global Change through Local Solutions in Humanitarian Action" focuses on tackling pressing challenges, sharing innovations, and strengthening partnerships. Vincent Omuga, Head of Office a.i., OCHA Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific shared key highlights from the Global Humanitarian Overview in his opening speech for this year's #RHPW and emphasised the importance of taking immediate action by translating the Grand Bargain's outcomes into tangible steps that improve lives and stressed that humanitarian efforts should focus on giving back to communities. The majority of forcibly displaced persons (refugees and internally displaced persons) live in contexts facing a high degree of fragility. For more sustainable approaches to forced displacement to succeed, the sustained engagement of development cooperation in these contexts remains important. What happens when we pit “global” vs. “local” knowledge? Pervasive inequality and stilted progress. In the third part of our Development Knowledge Matters blog series by Sarah Abdelatif, she gives examples of #local and #indigenous knowledge that exists and will equip development and humanitarian organisations to tackle #globalcrises. This needs the system to change; to listen to and put local actors at the forefront of programmatic work. Sarah notes that in the current set-up, as phrased by Rana B. Khoury and Emily K.M. Scott in The New Humanitarian, “[…] international aid actors are actually reinforcing their power through these processes. The system still determines whether local actors are worthy humanitarians, if they’re capable of receiving funding, how much core support costs they’re allowed, who can participate in coordination meetings, and even who is able to respond to crises in their own countries. […] In other words, international actors still have the power to let local actors into the humanitarian club – or to keep them out.” The piece concludes with a call to collect stories on how #localisation will move beyond being just talk with more examples, such as Cairo’s “Zabbaleen” who have much to teach us about recycling. Joining in from the UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi!    The #2024UNCSC has gathered representatives from over 110 countries across the world. 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐚 ZOA is attending the General Assembly of the Grand Bargain in Geneva. This unique forum brings together humanitarian actors, including governments, donors, UN organizations, and INGOs, to discuss and commit to improving our humanitarian system and increasing our impact. As a signatory and only Dutch INGO present, ZOA believes in collective action and honest discussions to make our work more effective and localized, supporting local leadership and capacity. Key topics include risk sharing, addressing increasing needs with decreasing budgets, scaling up effective approaches, and developing Anticipatory Action, innovative financing, and the nexus approach. We discussed the Nexus approach and emphasized that it is at the core of our organization. We are pleased with the ongoing dialogue about the importance of the Nexus approach on this platform. ZOA firmly believes in the peace Nexus approach, which involves investing in and connecting our humanitarian, development, and peace efforts. However, we also expressed our concern about the challenges in securing funding for the Nexus agenda. We still have an interesting afternoon full of sessions about innovative funding, and how the Grand bargain signatories can improve our collaboration on country level. #GrandBargain #Nexus #Development

A groundbreaking workshop was held in Amman from September 9th to 12th, focusing on "Decent Work across the Humanitarian, Peace, and Development Nexus." This event brought together key stakeholders from across the Arab region to discuss crucial strategies for promoting decent work in the face of ongoing crises. As the Arab region continues to grapple with various challenges, collaboration and coordination among governments, workers, organizations, and employers are essential to ensuring that vulnerable groups have access to decent work opportunities and adequate social protection. The workshop, a partnership with International Labour Organization and Sida, provided a platform for participants to share experiences, learn from best practices, and strengthen partnerships. Key takeaways from the event: ✅ The importance of a holistic approach: Promoting decent work requires a coordinated effort that addresses the interconnectedness of humanitarian, peace, and development issues. ✅ The role of social protection: Ensuring that vulnerable groups have access to social protection measures is crucial for building resilience and promoting social justice. ✅ The power of partnerships: Collaboration is essential for achieving sustainable and equitable development.
