Prescription eyeglasses pay for themselves, even at the bottom of the pyramid. So why do we still live in a world where nearly a billion people have not been able to get eyecare? DOT Glasses embeds the provision of prescription eyeglasses within a scalable business model that's already bringing $5 glasses to 5 countries across Africa. As a #socialenterprise backed by #impactinvesting, this has many follow-on benefits: 🚚 DOT Glasses needs to solve the whole picture of access to eyecare. This has forced them to innovate not just on the eyeglasses, but also with their “optical shop in a bag” for vision testing and their diverse network of distributors to access people who have never had access before. I’ve seen too many great products fail because they didn’t have a way to get to their beneficiaries. DOT Glasses will not make that mistake. 👓 DOT Glasses is accountable to the African consumer, even at the bottom of the pyramid. This means their product is not only robust and durable but also customizable, comfortable, and fashionable. Despite what one might think, that matters. Even at the bottom of the pyramid. 💡 Economic innovation. There’s no reason #eyeglasses need to be as expensive as they are, anywhere in the world. DOT Glasses has the potential to disrupt a market much larger than Africa, while at the same time improving the quality of life for millions who need it most. For these reasons and more, Africa Health Ventures invests in game-changing innovations to unlock Africa's healthcare markets. 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥 #𝐓𝐀𝐌𝐂2024 “𝑰𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆’𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚, 𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒘𝒏”. As the literary giant Chinua Achebe remarked, the second Transforming African Med-tech Conference held last week in Nairobi showed that the continent is taking tremendous strides in writing a new story about the African medical technology industry. Co-creating possible policy, investment and structural interventions that will create a vibrant, Africa-led med-tech marketplace; and engaging with innovators and thinkers from across the continent and drinking from the fountains of knowledge shared by great minds over 3 days were the highlights of our attendance and participation at the second Transforming African Med-tech Conference #TAMC2024. Meeting innovators from across the continent who are working to make a veritable impact on the health outcomes of all Africans was inspiring, with everyone actively sharing “war stories”, insights and “innovation hacks” to help each of us on our growth journeys. From Marrakesh to Cotonou, Nairobi to Pretoria, Yaounde to Accra, we exchanged go-to-market strategies for different territories and indeed cultural contexts, all with the aim of realising a vibrant African medical technology industry. We thank Villgro Africa, USAID, USAID's Kenya Investment Mechanism Philips Foundation, Jaza Rift Ifakara Health Institute NEST360 Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies, PATH, Kenyatta University and all the other sponsors and organisers for putting together this opportunity. And of course, a special shout out to the winners: People's Choice Award: Mari Test Most Promising Technology Award: Kunamandla Enterprises Most User-Centric Award: Mari Test Overall Winner: NeoNest by Che Innovations

𝙎𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙘𝙖𝙣? 𝗢𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻! Beyond the endless undulating hills that dot the scorched earth, Tiaty East sub-county in Baringo is perhaps better known by most as one focal point of the seemingly unending cycle of violence that plagues this section of the Siguta Valley. Abutted by Samburu to the east and Turkana to the north, the continued insecurity in this region means the community in this area have to also contend with a lack of access to medical services, including eye care. Not anymore! DOT Glasses has partnered with So They Can to bring eye care services right into the heart of the Siguta Valley and to the doorsteps of communities that live there. Overcoming the terrain, weather and other logistical challenges, we held an eye camp over the last week in the Adomoyen region. With over 400 people screened, 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙥 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙤𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙥 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙗𝙖𝙜 𝙢𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙤𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙜𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙤𝙣𝙚, 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙧 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠.
