My final assignment of 2024 was both fulfilling and inspiring—a three-day workshop for Turkana grassroots football leaders. We delved into personal development, leadership, and an introduction to sports business, equipping them with tools to grow their communities through football. It was a privilege to collaborate with Elias Kaburu and Zeddy Brodrick of Strathmore University, whose support was invaluable as part of the university's community outreach program. I also enjoyed playing in a friendly match—always a great way to connect on and off the field! ⚽ This initiative holds special meaning for me as the inaugural recipient of the Alumni of the Year Service to Society Award from Strathmore University. Turkana has indeed left a mark on me, and this second visit reinforces the transformative power of football and education in driving change. As the countdown to one of Africa’s biggest football tournaments, TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (“CHAN”), begins, it’s disheartening to see the hosts (Kenya specifically) still racing to complete stadium infrastructure. While this is concerning, what’s even more alarming is the lack of attention to other critical aspects: ✅ Human Resources: Who will ensure the seamless running of the event? Are the staff and volunteers adequately trained? ✅ Risk Management: Where are the contingency plans? Safety and security drills? How prepared are we to handle emergencies? ✅ Operational Readiness: Beyond the physical infrastructure, is the entire ecosystem—ticketing, transport, accommodation, healthcare—ready to support this massive undertaking? I addressed some of these issues in this article in 2018 when Kenya was stripped of CHAN hosting rights. https://lnkd.in/dD8Hr45s Even if this tournament passes without major incident, it’s a stark reminder of how we continue to gamble with our lives and our reputation on the global stage. Last year, our journey to kick off jersey sales faced significant delays, and we couldn't get our designs into production. Yet, despite the hurdles, we persisted. In May of this year, we proudly launched our first Mashujaa wa Afrika jerseys, marking a significant milestone in our club's growth. Throughout the rest of the year, we were fortunate to see the jerseys reach fans beyond Eldoret. We sold up to 50 jerseys to clients in Webuye, Kisumu, Nairobi, Kitui, West Pokot, the Hills of California, New York, London, Nice, Thon Le Blais in France, and of course, Eldoret—the heart of Kenya’s legendary running city. However, it hasn’t been a smooth ride. We've faced challenges with production delays, payment issues, and the loss of friends, fans, and potential clients. But we’ve learned that, as the saying goes, "Better late than never." A major highlight of the year was delivering jerseys to Brian Wesaala, CEO of The Football Foundation for Africa. His mentorship and role as a linkage to the world have been invaluable. Additionally, the Africa Football Business Summit provided us with the biggest market for our Mashujaa wa Afrika jerseys. Looking ahead, we are determined to refine our designs, introduce new merchandise, and make our club more sustainable. The sale of our jerseys has already helped fund player fees, club league expenses, and equipment costs. Thanks to your support, Eldoret FC is on the path to becoming bigger and better.
