  • Today, we had the pleasure of hosting Andrew Mathwick from Agri-Jobs for Youth, in partnership with GIZ Kenya, at Jumbo Fish Farm (JFF). The visit focused on understanding our operations and evaluating JFF for the SME LOOP Project Phase II, with a spotlight on our interest in the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) project. BSF offers an innovative, sustainable protein alternative for fish farming, reducing production costs and empowering small-scale farmers to boost yields. Together, we’re driving innovative feeds solutions that utilizes locally sourced ingredients for sustainable and resilient aquaculture for job creation. #Sustainability #Aquaculture #YouthEmpowerment #BlackSoldierFly #GIZKenya #innovation

Over the past week, our team from Jumbo Fish Farm, led by CEO Felix Osok, COO Kennedy Comba, and Hatchery & Technical Manager FREDRICK OUMA, embarked on an insightful tour of Norway’s aquaculture sector. This visit was part of a feasibility study sponsored by Norec, hosted by Val Skoler AS, and included participants from Jumbo Fish Farm and AquaFind AS. One of the highlights of the trip was our visit to Svaberget Smolt AS, where we learned about their advanced RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) hatchery. Under the guidance of Edgar Hermanstad Dahl, we explored how this state-of-the-art facility produces high-quality Atlantic salmon smolt with remarkable efficiency. The hatchery leverages RAS technology to maintain optimal water quality, oxygen levels, and temperature while significantly reducing water usage. Their commitment to data-driven operations stood out—real-time monitoring of metrics like feed intake, water quality, and growth rates ensures precision farming and sustainability. Key Lessons Learned 1. Efficiency Through Technology: The integration of RAS technology allows Svaberget Smolt to optimize smolt production while conserving resources. 2. Data-Driven Growth: The facility’s reliance on real-time data monitoring ensures operational precision and supports fish welfare. 3. Sustainability: Their practices align with global goals for sustainable aquaculture, minimizing environmental impact while maintaining productivity. Svaberget Smolt AS operates as part of the Sinkaberg AS Hansen network, which integrates hatcheries, grow-out farms, and processing facilities. This seamless value chain exemplifies innovation, sustainability, and efficiency at all levels of production. Takeaways for Kenya This visit provided invaluable insights for our team at JFF, laying the foundation for advancing technologies and data-driven practices in Kenya. These innovations will enhance efficiency, sustainability, and scalability in aquaculture operations while balancing automation with the need to sustain employment opportunities. By leveraging smart systems, we aim to improve productivity, operations, and logistics across the value chain for the benefit of humanity. We are grateful to Norec for sponsoring this feasibility study and to Val Skoler AS for hosting us. This collaboration strengthens our commitment to fostering a resilient and sustainable aquaculture ecosystem in both Kenya and Norway.
