Waste pickers play an indispensable role in advancing #sustainablewastemanagement by ensuring materials are recovered, sorted, and reintegrated into the value chain. As we mark International Waste Pickers Day 2025, we recognize the vital contribution of waste pickers in resource recovery and environmental conservation. In Kenya, the Sustainable Waste Management Act of 2022 recognizes the role of waste pickers, while the gazetted Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations offer greater opportunities for their inclusion in structured waste management systems — creating a future where no one is left behind in the journey towards a cleaner planet. At KEPRO Kenya we continue to advocate for the dignity, inclusion, and protection of waste pickers across the waste value chain. #GlobalWastePickersDay2025 #CircularEconomy #InclusiveWasteManagement

We have successfully hosted a panel session, hosting James Odongo, CEO, #KEPRO, Richard Kainika, Secretary General of the Kenya Association of Waste Recyclers, (Kenya Recyclers) and Annastacia Vyalu from National Environment Management Authority - KE (NEMA), who leads the department overseeing #EPR implementation. The discussion covered critical aspects of EPR implementation, with Annastacia addressing key queries and confirming that a fact sheet will be updated on the NEMA website, including the NEMA registration link, with a registration deadline of May 3rd. Richard Kainika clarified the role of waste operators in the EPR framework, while James Odongo provided insights on the role of a #PRO in #EPR implementation.More conversations will be held around EPR to address emerging concerns as we continue to adopt and implement EPR. "We are also required to ensure that these regulations work for all stakeholders — PROs, manufacturers, and waste pickers — by creating a system that is transparent and inclusive.” These were sentiments shared by DAVID ONGARE, Director Compliance at National Environment Management Authority - KE (NEMA), during the KEPRO Kenya–NEMA Compliance Baraza, where NEMA highlighted the critical role of #coordination and #collaboration in the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) regulations. His sentiments echoed, EPR is not just a compliance mechanism but a transformative approach contributing to Kenya’s circular economy transition, youth employment, and social inclusion — key priorities under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). NEMA further emphasized the importance of aligning EPR with national strategies, while demonstrating how effective EPR implementation can deliver both environmental and social impact. #KEPRONEMABaraza #EPRCompliance #CircularEconomy #SustainableKenya

Day 1 at the 3rd edition of Loop Forum Kenya! #KEPRO actively participated in the first day of the 3rd Edition of LOOP Forum Kenya, engaging the forum attendees through direct interactions at the KEPRO booth and contributing to a panel discussion on "Building Collaboration in Waste Management: Involving Communities, Research Institutions, and County Governments." The discussion emphasized the need for stronger stakeholder collaboration and the creation of enabling environments by integrating waste actors and working closely with county governments to create awareness on sustainable waste management. A key highlight was the critical role of community involvement, with case studies from Nakuru demonstrating how youth engagement in waste collection and management is driving employment and improving local waste services. KEPRO’s CEO James Odongo shared insights on the organization’s Consumer-Led Transformation Initiative, which is built on three key pillars: Knowledge Sharing to equip stakeholders with essential waste management insights, Behavior Change to promote sustainable waste management practices; and Taking Inspired Action to mobilize communities in implementing real and lasting solutions. Stay tuned for day 2! #LOOPFORUM #CircularEconomy
