Last week was a big week for us at Loop as we said goodbye to our home for the last 16 months (our third home in 2 years), and hello to bigger things. This was a particularly special home as it enabled us to really test out our (not so) crazy idea of creating wholesome, nutritious pet food that is good for the planet, make our way into more pet homes, and welcome a larger team to make it all happen. Some of our highlights over this period include: Ø We received our KEBS certification on our adult, puppy and treats products allowing us to start selling in retail spaces Ø Our first (and second) export to Rwanda Ø We hit our production capacity with our current production line – growing 190% over the period and the reason we needed to move... in order to facilitate new and bigger things Today, we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved to date. But. So many new and exciting things are coming... Here are some pictures on our final day on production in our old home. Happy Edible Insects Day! EVERYDAY is an insect eating day at Loop Pet Food as we personally trial each and every batch of dog food that we produce: If it is good enough for our dogs, it is good enough for us! But why is it important that our future food systems include insects as a protein? Our favourite insect is the black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), an upcycling hero that consumes organic waste and bioconverts it into glorious (and sustainable) protein in as little as 2 weeks. The bi-product of this bioconversion process is organic fertiliser - an essential commodity to build the health of our soils as we work (very hard) towards feeding our future (sustainably). Through this process, organic waste is diverted from landfill along with all the CO2 that would have been emitted through its decay, and these insects are using the nutrients that are available in this waste. Insects like BSFL are known as a sustainable protein source because they do so much good for our planet as opposed to traditional protein sources - think beef, pork, poultry. For the most part, this comes down to the natural resources that are required to farm livestock including immense quantities of water, land and deforestation as a result of the demand for soy to feed them. But this is a good news story so lets get back to the epicness of bugs! BSF have been regulated for use in pet food in many countries around the world (including #Kenya) after significant research into their beneficial nutritional attributes for pets and livestock. Loop Pet Food is playing in the pet food world but as insect farms scale, we hope to see their products used more widely!
