Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation.

About us

MSF medical teams work in more than 70 countries to provide lifesaving assistance where it is needed the most. In 2019, 65,000 people worked with MSF in conflicts, epidemics, following natural disasters and where people would not otherwise have access to medical care. We work according to principles of independence, neutrality and impartiality; providing assistance to people who need it the most, regardless of who they are, where they come from, their political or religious beliefs. The organisation has some of its largest medical projects across East Africa including in Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia and Burundi. In these countries, MSF runs hospitals, health centres and mobile clinics and launches emergency projects as spikes in healthcare needs arise.

Chris Lockyear, Secretary-General of MSF, has urgently called attention to the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict in Sudan on women and children. Speaking from Nyala, South Darfur, he described one of the worst maternal and child health crises the world is witnessing today. In Nyala, 1 in 30 women are dying from pregnancy-related complications, and more than one-third of children screened by MSF are acutely malnourished. To respond to this crisis, we need: 1️⃣ Unrestricted humanitarian access to Sudan 2️⃣ Immediate scaling-up of maternal, sexual, and reproductive health services 3️⃣ Expanded emergency child nutrition programs 4️⃣ The return of full UN operational capacity to Darfur, especially Nyala Coordinated action and increased visibility of this crisis are essential to save lives. #TalkAboutSudan #HumanitarianAid #ChildNutrition #ReproductiveHealth #MSF

  • This morning, amidst intense fighting in Al Mawasi, a densely populated area in southern Gaza, 12 of our team members and their families were surrounded by bombing and heavy shootings in their homes, while more than 30 others were trapped in the MSF office. "Tanks were invading the area where we live. It was terrifying. We were lying on the ground in our homes for hours and it seemed like the gun fire was coming directly towards us,” says an MSF staff member trapped in Al Mawasi. While injured people were arriving to the MSF emergency room in the health clinic of Al Mawasi, our teams were forced to close the facility due to insecurity, leaving people without lifesaving care. MSF is deeply concerned for the safety of our staff and patients in Gaza and calls all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and all aid workers, and to establish an immediate and permanent ceasefire across the Strip. #Gaza #MSF #Medicalcare

  • The landfall on 15 December of cyclone Chido 🌀🌀🌀 in Mozambique has created havoc across various areas in the northern part of the country, affecting tens of thousands of people and killing dozens, according to the initial estimates of the authorities. An MSF emergency team has conducted assessments in Pemba and Metuge districts of Cabo Delgado province, where we were already present responding to the ongoing conflict, and donated 50 emergency kits to the Ministry of Health, including items to treat wounds, suture material and infusion set. We have identified that several health centres in Metuge have suffered significant damages and are in need of logistical support for rehabilitation. MSF is concerned about the impact that this natural disaster has had on people’s access to clean drinking water and is coordinating with the local authorities to step up the response if needed. Mozambique is a country very vulnerable to the climate crisis and every year suffers the impact of cyclones during this season. #CycloneChido #Mayotte #MSF #Medicalcare #HumanitarianAid

  • 🚨We are closely monitoring the situation in the French overseas department of Mayotte, following the passage of cyclone Chido on 14 December. We are currently gathering information and setting up a team to visit the island as soon as the situation allows, to assess needs and define the scope for a potential response. Initial reports indicate a very serious situation on the island, with water and electricity cut off, roads severely damaged, communication difficulties, and a number of lives lost, the true extent of which remains unknown at this stage. We are particularly worried about the people living in neighbourhoods of insecurely built houses, which have been completely destroyed. The living conditions of residents were already precarious before the cyclone hit. Between May and August 2024, we responded to a cholera epidemic on Mayotte, and improved access to water, hygiene and sanitation, and supported local associations in health promotion on diarrheal diseases and cholera. #CycloneChido #Mayotte #MSF #Medicalcare #HumanitarianAid

  • Since January, MSF has treated 2,616 children for severe malnutrition in our inpatient facilities in Baidoa, Galkayo North and Galkayo South, already surpassing the total of 1,988 children treated in 2023. More than 11,800 children with severe malnutrition without complications were treated in our ambulatory centers. Many children were classified as suffering from acute malnutrition due to their weight being critically low for their height and age and that some patients exhibited generalized body swelling (edema). "Malnutrition may impact the growth and child development," says Said Abdullahi, MSF medical team leader. “We were only able to see a small portion of malnourished children in the three areas, while there are likely many children who cannot access health care. MSF provides therapeutic food and treats accompanying illnesses while also working to raise community awareness, helping caregivers recognize symptoms of malnutrition and learn prevention strategies.” #Malnutrition #Baidoa #Somalia #Medicalcare

  • Over the past 12 months, MSF teams have witnessed the continuation and escalation of conflicts, such as those in Gaza and Sudan, where unabated wars have raged into a second year. Our teams were also there for people and families seeking safety throughout the year, whether at the Mexico border or onboard our search and rescue ship in the Mediterranean Sea. This collection of 65 photos, taken between December 2023 and December 2024, features the highs and lows we – and those we assist – experience as we provide medical and humanitarian assistance in over 70 countries. They show the breaking points – such as when we had to suspend activities in Haiti’s capital – but also resilience and joy, as when we witnessed a mother meeting her baby for the first time in South Sudan. These photos show how bearing witness can create a point of connection. Medical care provides relief in the most difficult of circumstances, and we remain inspired by our staff’s commitment to deliver this care to people, even as the obstacles to doing so increase around us. 📸 See them all: https://lnkd.in/gncETVD4 #MSF #Medicalcare #HumanitarianAid
