🌍 Biochar in Concrete: A Key to Decarbonising the Cement Industry 🌱 The European Biochar Industry Consortium's latest position paper highlights how biochar can transform the cement industry by reducing emissions, enhancing concrete properties, and providing long-term carbon storage. It’s an exciting roadmap for integrating biochar into construction materials, and we are proud to be contributing to this global movement. Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/e4XzNZ_S. At Pyrogen, we’ve taken this innovation a step further. Here in Kenya, we are pioneering patented methods to integrate biochar into concrete, making us the first to bring this transformative solution to the region. Our approach not only supports sustainable building practices but also provides a locally-driven model for carbon removal by utilising waste and invasive biomass species as biochar feedstock. Why it Matters: ✔️ Sustainability: Reducing the cement content in concrete lowers emissions and creates durable, carbon-storing products. ✔️ Local Impact: By sourcing biomass from local communities, we create jobs and support environmental restoration. ✔️ Innovation: Our patented process ensures strong, high-quality concrete products infused with the benefits of biochar. We’re leading the way in developing biochar-based solutions in Africa that address climate change and create new opportunities for green construction. #Biochar #BiocharConcrete #LowCarbonConcrete #ConcreteInnovation #GreenConstructionMaterials #Sustainability #CarbonRemoval #Kenya #Pyrogen

Africa Finance Corporation release its 'State of Africa's Infrastructure Report 2024' 📢 Key Insights from the Africa Infrastructure Report 2024 🏗️ The Africa Infrastructure Report 2024 outlines several critical facts regarding the continent's infrastructure and construction needs: - 🌍 By 2050, 60% of Africa’s population is expected to live in urban areas, requiring massive #infrastructure development. This expansion will fuel demand for eco-friendly building materials, including #low #carbon #concrete solutions - 🏗 70% of the infrastructure needed by 2040 across #Africa is still to be built. This provides a unique opportunity to incorporate sustainable building materials from the outset. - 🌿 The report highlights the over-reliance on energy-intensive materials like cement, which significantly contribute to Africa’s #carbon #emissions. There is an urgent need to adopt #low #carbon #materials to mitigate this impact. - ♻ #Decarbonising Africa’s #construction sector is crucial for achieving climate goals, especially with the increasing demand for infrastructure to support urbanisation. - 📈 Africa’s #green #building market is expected to grow significantly, driven by the need for climate-resilient, low-carbon solutions to meet future infrastructure demands. The report makes it clear: to build a sustainable future, Africa must prioritise low-carbon, locally sourced materials in its construction and infrastructure planning. Our patented biochar-infused concrete mixes are one small cog in contributing to lower-carbon solutions for the built environment in #Africa. #Biochar #LowCarbonConcrete #SustainableConstruction #AfricaInfrastructure #GreenBuilding #Decarbonisation #ClimateResilience #AfricaInfrastructureReport #LowCarbonMaterials #CircularEconomy

The European Biochar Industry Consortium (EBI) has released a position paper on the use of #biochar in #concrete mixes. It's a fitting testament to the benefits of utilising various sources of #biochar in #concrete. At Pyrogen, we are infusing #biochar in our, recently KIPI awarded, patented design mix process. These mixes are used in the manufacture of high quality, durable, and fast-moving consumer products such as cabro blocks, paving slabs and more. Not only are we locking away #carbon for >1,000 years, we are able to offer the 🌍 African consumer a competitive #concrete product that plays it's part in reducing the footprint 👣 of the built world 🏢 . According to an African Development Bank Group 2018 publication, Africa's annual #infrastructure gap is close to 💰 $100bn. Filling this gap has the potential to release billions of tons of #carbon . Sustainable 🌿 , low-carbon, low-cost and durable construction materials 🏗 will be the key to minimising the environmental and climatic impact of matching Africa's population and resource demand growth. #africa #biochar #carbonremoval #lowcarbonconcrete #netzero EBI paper - https://lnkd.in/dhsaUXPf AfDB - https://lnkd.in/dq7frdNd

We’re very pleased to share the European Biochar Industry Consortium (EBI)'s position paper on the permanence of biochar storage in concrete. The paper states that biochar can be safely mixed into concrete, creating stable and durable carbon sinks. Here are some of the key scientific findings of the paper: - Biochar produced over 550C contains a significant content of carbon that is considered structurally equivalent to inertinite. - In concrete, inertinite biochar is an inseparable component of the cement matrix. Only if the concrete were to be subject to extremely high temperatures can the carbon dioxide be re-emitted. Current recycling methods do not reach high temperatures. - At the end of life, most of the concrete material is recovered, either for use as recycled aggregates or downcycled for use as a filler in roads and other uses Here are the key recommendations for different groups: 🔍 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Consider using biochar in concrete as a way to securely store carbon for thousands of years. 🏗️ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀: Connect with biochar suppliers to start creating new concrete products. 💰 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀: See biochar concrete as an important part of your carbon offset plans. 📊 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀: Update carbon tracking and environmental standards to include the benefits of using biochar in construction. NEW: Trials have shown that adding relatively small amounts of biochar to soil can significantly increase the amount of nutrients essential for crop growth, boosting yields. Black Bull Biochar, SRUC and UKCEH are assessing biochar's effectiveness and practicality as an additive to slurry on dairy farms in a project funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Unlike previous field trials that have spread a large amount of biochar on farmland, typically 10 tonnes or more per hectare, the new project has used just 0.5 tonnes per hectare, which would make it more practical to implement at scale within agriculture. Initial results from the trials in Dumfries showed grassland plots with biochar and slurry contained 51% more carbon and 22% more nitrogen in the soil compared to the plots with only slurry applied. These two nutrients are essential for plant functions. Professor Jeanette Whitaker, Principal Scientist in Soil and Land Use at UKCEH, said: "Results from the first year of the BBB field trials are really exciting as they demonstrate that in addition to storing carbon in the soil, biochar application to grassland has benefits for crop productivity and nutrient retention."
