We partnered with Brightshine Housing Limited to install SolarisKit Ltd | Certified B Corp Solar Hot Water Systems in all the 28 Court C units at the Easternville Housing Project along the Eastern Bypass of the Nairobi Ring Road. Always wonderful to see another installation of our flat-packed solar collectors in Africa, this time in Kenya by our local partner SOLFLARE LTD. Kris Aitchison and I will be making a few trips over the coming months to Kenya and Rwanda to support the deployment of low carbon heating solutions in East Africa and establishing East Africa's first solar thermal centre of excellence in partnership with Strathmore University and the Strathmore Energy Research Centre. We held an interesting event at the Nairobi ComAp Academy last week where we discussed Power Generation and Hybrid Microgrid Controls. The ComAp Group organised the event. The following are the highlights:   1. There is huge potential for renewable energy in #East Africa. For example, in #Kenya, the current installed electric generation capacity is about 3GW, yet the potential of #solar PV alone is above 13GW. With wind speeds of 6m/s which are nearly twice the world average, the country can generate an additional 3GW from wind, another 3GW from small hydros and 10GW from geothermal.   2. Electricity consumption in East Africa is still growing. Kenya's electricity consumption stands at 13 GWh while that of Germany, for example, is 490,000 GWh. Also, remember that over 40% of Kenya's consumption happens in #Nairobi - the capital city!   3. #Power Generation during this era of embracing #renewable energy comes with benefits and challenges. The combination of several sources of energy means you need to prevent, or at least control, the export of that self-generated power to the grid while remaining connected to the grid power in case you run out of renewable energy. The most cost-effective energy source must be given priority, managing the charge-discharge cycles of the #BESS and using historical data and weather forecasts to decide when to use the #solar, #BESS, #grid, or traditional #gensets.   4. At the Nairobi event, we discussed how #InteliNeo530BESS, #InteliNeo5500, #InteliNeo6000, #InteliMains1010, #InteliGen1000, #InteliSCADA, and #Websupervisor are applied to effectively monitor, control and manage #Hybrid #Microgrids. Best of all, it was #fun to #network with the nice people in the #energy sector.
