A new Unitaid report shows how manufacturing antimalarials in Africa is critical to fighting #malaria. The report identifies opportunities for interventions that address the barriers to achieving scaled, cost-effective, sustainable and commercially viable manufacturing of antimalarials in Africa. The new report also demonstrates how the antimalarial manufacturing value chain is already being nurtured in Africa, highlighting how MMV and Unitaid supported Kenya’s Universal Corporation Limited in becoming the first African manufacturer to gain WHO prequalification for medicines to prevent malaria in pregnant women and children. A child dies of malaria every minute... That is a frightful statistic, making this year’s theme of World Malaria Day ‘Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world’ of the highest priority. We need to combat this disease with every means at our disposal. 2023 has seen several promising developments, like the introduction in 13 countries of the new RTS,S vaccine as a standard immunization method, resulting in dramatic drops in child mortality. A 2nd vaccine, called R21, has recently been WHO approved and is expected to result in sufficient vaccine supply to meet demand. A total of 43 countries have graduated to being malaria free. These are inspiring and encouraging results, showing that global efforts are paying off. At the same time, there are new challenges endangering this progress. Climate change is posing a threat as the mosquitos prosper in our warmer world and could spread to other territories. Increased resistance of the mosquitos to the current insecticides and drugs is another one. Donors are investing in research and development of new treatment methods and alternative ways of prevention, like the next generation ITNs, insecticide treated bednets, that The Global Fund is now focusing procurement on. Another trend is the focus on local production. Africa accounts for 95% of malaria cases and deaths globally. Reliable access to quality-assured malaria treatment is crucial to reducing the impact of the disease. Locally produced and locally sourced pharmaceuticals will increase countries’ resilience to diseases. But there are few producers of quality-assured medicines in the region. As a result, Africa currently imports up to 80% of the pharmaceuticals it uses. Of the continent’s 375 medicine producers, only six manufacture drugs to World Health Organization (WHO) prequalification (PQ) standards. The rest are constrained by underinvestment, infrastructure limitations, or regulatory challenges, according to this insightful essay, jointly published by our client Medicines for Malaria Venture and our supplier Universal Corporation Limited, one of the few in Africa with WHO prequalification https://lnkd.in/e5wQKqiW. i+solutions is pleased to play a role in the pooled procurement of antimalarials for The Global Fund and also works with governments and implementors to procure antimalaria and preventive treatments and deliver them to thousands of patients in over 100 countries. #worldmalariaday #endmalaria

i+solutions strongly recognizes the role of regional suppliers in contributing to the public health environment and believes their success brings significant value to making quality affordable medicines more accessible to patients. Since 2015, i+solutions has a strong partnership with Universal Corporation Limited, Kenya (Universal). Universal is one of few African manufacturers to have obtained WHO prequalification for its production site and several products. i+ procures cotrimoxazole and other essential medicines from Universal under it’s donor funded projects. Since recently, XS2Meds (www.xs2meds.org), a fully owned subsidiary of i+solutions, launched some of the Universal products to it’s private sector clients in East-Africa, which will further increase the use of locally produced products available on the continent. In a recent conversation with Meer Dhanani, Business Development Manager at Universal, also responsible for new product launches, we discussed access to medicines through local production, its challenges, how critical it is for the self-sufficiency and self-reliance of the health care sector on the African continent. Meer gave us several insights on how African manufacturing differs slightly from Asian manufacturing and what is needed to scale up local production capacity. Please read all about those insights here https://lnkd.in/g8Yay4GD. Mitigating supply risk for the African continent is high on the public health agenda. Investments are needed to build up local supply capacity and make sure economies of scale start working in favor of African pharma companies. i+solutions and Universal are jointly looking at more sustainable business, expansion of products and expansion of territories, driving their joint purpose of making quality affordable medicines available to all patients. #accesstomedicines #localproduction #supplychain #procurement

Taking place this week, Unitaid’s 2024 Industry Engagement Forum aims to support the increase of health product manufacturing in #Africa. Industrializing African healthcare sectors will enhance health security on the continent and around the world, increase access to affordable health solutions and provide tailored medicines for regional needs. MMV has been working in partnership with African manufacturers to support them in meeting World Health Organization standards of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Prequalification, including Kenya’s Universal Corporation Limited, which has gained WHO prequalification for a medicine to prevent malaria in pregnant women and infants, and another to prevent malaria in children. Last week, Malaria No More UK published a collection of essays highlighting the pivotal role multi-country collaborations play in eradicating diseases and promoting a more equitable world. MMV’s Vice President, Market Dynamics & Global Supply Security, Pierre Hugo and Universal Corporation Limited’s Founder and Managing Director Perviz Dhanani contributed an essay to the publication on the powerful role African-manufactured antimalarials can play in the fight against malaria. In line with its mission to discover, develop and deliver equitable access to affordable antimalarials, MMV works in partnership with African manufacturers like Universal Corporation Ltd. to support them in meeting World Health Organization Good Manufacturing Practice and prequalification standards, strengthening the production of quality-assured antimalarial medicines.
