Annual regional event dedicated to ESG topics & sustainable development. // Formerly called Western Balkans ESG Summit.

About us

ESG Adria Summit will take place in Porto Montenegro from 24th to 26th April 2024, bringing together business leaders, high-level government, international organisations, civil society representatives, and sustainability experts from the Adria region and beyond. This year’s event expands on the legacy of the highly successful inaugural Western Balkans ESG Summit 2023, the first major regional event devoted to sustainable development and dialogue on greater responsibility of the business sector regarding environmental, social and governance standards (ESG) in practice. Last year, over 500 attendees from over 150 companies, governments, and other organisations gathered to discuss the implications of ESG for “The Business of the Future” in the Western Balkans. This year, we will convene under the banner “Act Now for a Sustainable Tomorrow” to identify and discuss new solutions, initiatives and investments that can help accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future and ESG agenda in Adria and beyond. Keynotes, panels and workshops under the Summit’s 2024 themes Sustainable Finance, Green Transition and Social Licence to Operate will all focus on real regional issues and practical solutions to empower businesses to set and achieve their ESG objectives and regulatory compliance requirements. ESG Adria Summit is organized by Sustineri Partners and Porto Montenegro, in partnership with the Government of Montenegro and under the auspices of the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović.

Did you know that one of the largest islands in the Adriatic Sea, Krk in Croatia, is the cradle of Croatian literacy? Yes, it's home to the Baška Tablet, a 12th-century stone inscription written in Glagolitic script, and it's the oldest preserved monument with Croatian language and script. But did you know that Krk is also, as of recently, the first island in Croatia to reach zero-waste status? That's right! Krk is Croatia's first certified Zero-Waste Island and the second in the world, following Tilos in Greece. This incredible achievement, recognised by Zero Waste Europe (Mission Zero Academy), highlights Krk's dedication to sustainable waste management—even in the face of the tourism challenges that come with being a popular summer destination. 🚀 What makes Krk Island a zero-waste pioneer? ✅ 58% separate waste collection – far above the national average. ✅ 22% less mixed waste per capita – reducing landfill reliance. ✅ Cutting-edge infrastructure: sorting facility, composting plant, and 7 recycling centres. ✅ Continuous education and awareness campaigns for waste reduction. The result? A cleaner, greener environment and a higher quality of life for locals and visitors alike. Let Krk's story signal to the entire Adria region that embracing innovation and taking steps toward sustainable goals can create a greener future for us all! Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVaHdWeg

As COP 29 takes centre stage, the connection between human rights and environmental protection has never been more critical — or urgent. Environmental harm is not just an ecological issue; it strikes at the core of fundamental rights, from health to property and even life itself. We are delighted to share Human Rights and Environmental Protection in Europe: Case law from the European Court of Human Rights and its Implications, prepared by The AIRE Centre Western Balkans in partnership with Sustineri Partners. Authored by William Ferris, with contributions from Biljana Braithwaite, Catharina Harby, Nevena Dicic Kostic, and Azra Becirovic, this guide explores how the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is being applied to tackle pressing challenges like pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. This work is particularly relevant in the Western Balkans, a region rich in natural resources but highly vulnerable to environmental degradation. Designed as a resource for policymakers, legal professionals, and activists, it offers actionable insights that can drive meaningful change. Key sections of the guide analyse how various articles of the ECHR — including the right to life, health, privacy, and property — are applied to mitigate environmental threats. Notably, it includes an examination of the 2024 judgement in Verein KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz and Others v. Switzerland, which potentially sets a new precedent for the Court’s approach to climate obligations. At a time of uncertainty and inconsistency in how courts are approaching environmental cases, this guide provides a map of relevant European standards that guide judicial actors on the path of protection of human rights and environment. At present the guide is available in English and BCMS 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dS4qvK-R Stronger governance, adequate legal frameworks and their full and effective implementation, and bold decisions can pave the way for a future where human rights and the environment are protected hand in hand.

At the COP29 UN Climate Change Conference unfolding in Azerbaijan, we heard positive messages about the European Union's commitment to the Paris Agreement and the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Climate change knows no borders; it impacts lives and economies worldwide, including those in the Adria region, where it presents a unique set of challenges. 💡 Key Highlights: 👉 Climate Finance—The EU aims to prioritise the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) to streamline global financial flows in accordance with the Paris Agreement. 👉Energy Transition: The EU is focused on transitioning away from fossil fuels, tripling renewable energy investments, and doubling energy efficiency by 2030, all of which are embedded in its proposal for the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). 👉International Carbon Markets: The EU is working to finalise the carbon market negotiations under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. By establishing common standards taking in mind high integrity, additionality, durability, and accountability, the EU is setting foundation for funding mitigation and adaptation projects globally. 🔎 What does it mean for the Adria region? Countries in the Adria are among the first to feel the impacts of climate change, from rising sea levels to the need for a more resilient energy sector. The outcomes of COP29 will influence climate finance flows, energy investments, and policies aimed at sustainable development and climate resilience. Ultimately, the goal remains the same: securing everyone's future by working together!

As November and COP29 approach, global attention is turning to the critical issue of climate action. This year is particularly significant, as three interconnected COPs will focus on climate change, biodiversity, and desertification. This only reiterates the urgent need for globally integrated approaches to tackle environmental challenges. Here’s why this matters for business leaders: 🌡 The primary goal of COP is to reduce global carbon emissions and limit global warming to 1.5°C. What does it mean in practice? The countries need to accelerate the transition to clean energy and decarbonise industries across the globe. At the same time, businesses will need to adapt to stricter regulations, particularly around mandatory carbon reporting and sustainable finance. 🌿 Biodiversity and climate change are closely intertwined. The collapse of ecosystems affects food production, water security, and in turn growth of the global economy. Resilient business strategies must include nature-positive practices, such as protecting and restoring ecosystems and ensuring sustainable supply chains to combat this issue. 🏗 Land degradation results in food security troubles and contributes to higher carbon emissions. Businesses involved in agriculture, real estate, and construction should adopt sustainable land use practices to counter these issues and secure their future. The stakes are high, and the need for collective action across these areas has never been more critical. How can businesses and governments strengthen their #ESG strategies to meet these challenges head-on? 🌍 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gDv_B97f #TripleCOP #COP16 #COP29 #ClimateAction #CleanEnergy #Biodiversity #ESG

According to the latest UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency statistics, 117.3 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations or events seriously disturbing public order. When we examine human rights situations worldwide, businesses, governments, and international institutions play critical roles in bridging gaps and protecting fundamental freedoms. At the ESG Adria Summit 2024, at the panel "Protecting Human Rights: Role of Governments and Businesses", we explored these pressing issues more deeply, especially in the Adria region, where gaps in human rights protections persist. Our panellists emphasised the urgent need for collaborative efforts to ensure accountability in protecting human rights in the region and improve best practices. However, there’s no one-size-fits-all for human rights implementation. A smart mix of policies, laws, and meaningful engagement is essential to promote adequate business practices. National approaches must keep pace with global standards like mandatory human rights due diligence, while collaboration between businesses, investors, and civil society is vital to drive progress. Ultimately, effective collaboration should foster the sharing of best practices, leveraging diverse perspectives, and collective action on human rights challenges. 🎥 Check out the full discussion with our panellists on our YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/eKfVuSWM Panellists: Nevena Dicic Kostic, Policy and Research Lead, Sustineri Partners Dunja Mijatović, Human Rights Expert, Former Commissioner for the Human Rights, Council of Europe Andrea Shemberg, Chair, Global Business Initiative on Human Rights Luke Wilde, CEO, twentyfifty The panel was moderated by Silvio Gonzato, Ambassador and Head of the European Union Delegation to Albania. #HumanRights #ESG #Sustainability #Adria #ESGAdria #CollaborativeAction #ResponsibleBusiness

Starting October 20, #Montenegro has banned the use of plastic bags and other single-use plastics as intended with the new Waste Management Law. ♻ This law aligns with EU standards and aims to create a modern and sustainable waste management system, promoting a circular economy and reducing waste. The violations of the law could result in fines ranging from €1,000 to €40,000. 📃 Special attention was paid when drafting the Waste Management Law to the creation of an effective organisation of the extended producer responsibility system for the following types of products: packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, accumulators, vehicles and used tyres. Government of Montenegro officials emphasised that this move is crucial for the country’s ecological future, for the creation of new jobs, protection of natural resources, and reducing environmental impacts, particularly in the tourism sector. 💚 This significant step supports Montenegro's long-term vision of becoming a cleaner, greener economy! #Montenegro #CircularEconomy #WasteManagement #GreenTransition
