About us

IOM is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners, established in 1951. With 175 member states, a further 8 states holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants. IOM works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people. The IOM Constitution recognizes the link between migration and economic, social and cultural development, as well as to the right of freedom of movement. IOM works in the four broad areas of migration management: • Migration and development • Facilitating migration • Regulating migration • Forced migration. IOM activities that cut across these areas include the promotion of international migration law, policy debate and guidance, protection of migrants' rights, migration health and the gender dimension of migration. IOM has been present in Montenegro since 2001. As Montenegro continues to pursue its aim of accession to the European Union (EU), increasing attention has been given to key migration issues by the Government, civil society, and the media. Today, with a focus on building the capacity of Montenegrin Government to manage migration, IOM is working with a wide range of governmental and non-governmental partners in the following thematic areas: Humanitarian Assistance and Protection, Resilience and Social Cohesion, Human Mobility and Migration Governance.

    ✨ Celebrating International Migrants Day 2024 ✨ Today, we gathered at the UN Eco House in Podgorica 📍 to honour International Migrants Day 2024! #IMD2024 🔹The event featured inspiring speeches, beginning with an address by UN Resident Coordinator Diego Zorilla, followed by insights from IOM Chief of Mission Vladimir Gjorgjiev, and Aleksandar Jacimovic from the Montenegrin Diaspora. 🔹As part of the program, the UN Network on Migration was presented by IOM Chief of Mission, whose tasks are aligned with #UNSDCF 2023-2027, the #GCM, and the member state vision for a better future, highlighting the collaborative efforts for safe, orderly, and dignified migration. 🔹We wish to thank all of our colleagues from the United Nations in Montenegro that joined us today in commemorating such an important event. Let’s continue working together to celebrate diversity, foster inclusion, and create opportunities for migrants worldwide. 🤝 #IMD2024

    👉Workshop on Action Plan Development for the Implementation of the Strategy on Migration and Reintegration of Returnees in Montenegro, held on 3 and 4 December in Budva. 📍 🔹Organized under the “EU Regional Support to Protection-Sensitive Migration Management Systems in the Western Balkans” project, the event brought together representatives from the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNHCR, and IOM, fostering meaningful collaboration on developing the 2025 Action Plan for implementing Montenegro’s Strategy on Migration and Reintegration of Returnees. 🔹Participants had the opportunity to engage in productive discussions on the national development priorities in migration management and define key actions for the upcoming year. IOM remains committed to building partnerships and advancing sustainable, effective solutions for migration management and reintegration. 🤝 #MigrationManagement #Reintegration #InternationalCollaboration

    👉Project “Enhancing the National Response to the Use of Technology in Cases of Trafficking in Persons in Montenegro” kick off 🗣 🔹With the support of the IOM Development Fund, IOM Montenegro continues to enhance and inclusively address the national response to the use of technology in human trafficking cases through the implementation of the 24-month project “Enhancing the National Response to the Use of Technology in Cases of Trafficking in Persons in Montenegro.” 🔹Project implementation was kicked off with the first Steering Committee Meeting that gathered representatives of relevant national institutions to discuss the project implementation plan, exchange relevant information regarding current trends and agree on the next steps. 🔹Following this meeting, IOM organized its first training activity within this project, the second national roll-out training on "Digital Investigations and Victim-Centered Interviewing Techniques", held on 6 and 8 November 2024. This training aimed at strengthening the capacities of law enforcement representatives to conduct digital investigations into potential online and technology facilitated trafficking in persons cases in a gender sensitive and rights-based manner. Throughout the training, participants had the opportunity to learn on: ▪️ Digital investigations and contemporary modus operandi in trafficking in human beings ▪️ Victim-centered interviewing techniques

    👉AVRR Partnership Engagement and Outreach in coastal area 🤝 🔹This week, IOM Montenegro visited the southern municipalities of Budva and Bar to enhance collaboration and promote the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (hashtag #AVRR) program. The focus of the visit was engaging with key local stakeholders and exploring areas frequently visited by migrants. 🔹We held productive meetings with various partners, including Municipal Offices, Border police, the Red Cross, Caritas, NGO Pristaniste, UA Cultural Centers, and the offices of the Ministry of the Interior. These discussions emphasized the importance of creating strong referral mechanisms and ensuring that migrants have access to reliable and accurate information about AVRR. 🔹We are committed to working together with local organizations to support migrants, empowering them with the resources needed to make informed decisions about their future. This visit marks another step forward in building a comprehensive support network in Montenegro’s coastal region. We thank to all parties involved to help us provide support to the ones in need. 🖇 This activity is part of a project: Addressing Mixed Migration Flows in the Western Balkans supported by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway.
