The MexScot Alumni Association stands for the strengthening of the bonds between Mexico and Scotland through its members
Sobre nosotros
Scotland, the land of the brave. The birthplace of Wallace, Bruce, Smith, Burns, Scott, Stevenson, and more of the brightest minds of the 19th and 20th century. Where the European Enlightenment started. The country with wee green hills and majestic glens, deep lochs, and dangerous gales; with a proud history and a bright future. That marvellous place was our home for one to six years. We Mexicans fell in love with its nature, landscapes, but most importantly: people. For this reason, the Mexican Scottish Alumni Association is looking for cooperation between both our countries. We, alumni of every Scottish university, travelled from every part of Mexico, carrying our dreams for a better future. With our determination we achieved masters or a PhD degree, some of us both. With that in mind, we returned to our homeland, practising what we learned, helping others with our knowledge, and helping others to live what we lived. In this context, cooperation is part of what we learned in the time we lived in Scotland. By studying with many people from other countries, we understand that it will help achieve a better world for everyone. So cooperation is in our veins and must be in every aspect of our lives. MexScot Alumni Association stands as the society for bridging Alba and the land in the Centre of the Moon. We have a lot in common like Skara Brae and La Venta; several cultures such as Picts, Gaels, Vikings, and Scots; Aztecs, Mayans, Mixtecs, Olmecs, Purepecha, and other precolombian societies that shaped the history of our countries. Similarities between Scotland and Mexico are vast. For example, a Scotsman invented the television; a Mexican added colour. A Scottish discovered penicillin; a Mexican developed birth-control pills. Scotland gave the world Whisky; Mexico, Tequila. Scotland has the haggis, Mexico pancita. Scotland makes everything deep-fried, Mexican makes everything in a taco. Alba gu Brath! ¡Viva México!

About last night.... Thanks British Council
Last night, the British Council invited several alumni from Mexico City and its surroundings to the first alumni night at Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México. The event started with a magnificent presentation from Fernando Esponda about what we can name #ArtificialIntelligence. The conference discussed the benefits, challenges, and risks that #AI brings to society. Fernando also commented that we should look out for new algorithms that could improve the faults that we are seeing, like bias or lack of data. After the conference, I asked him about the importance of discourse analysis in improving AI outcomes, and we agreed that we need to cure data before uploading it to have better results. The networking helped me connect with more MexScot Alumni Association members, like Astrid Karam, Diego Bustamante Gil, and Christian Rosales Fuentes, and meet more alumni, such as Ariadna Díaz, Enrique Covarrubias, Francisco Sequera, Octavio Alonso Castelán-Ortega, and many others. This event will definitely help Universities Scotland reach out to alumni in the Americas, especially in Mexico.

In her book "Gossip in the Forest", #SarahMaitland discusses the importance of forests, trees, and fairytales in the relationship between people and nature. Every year, The Woodland Trust decides on a Tree for the current year. In 2024, a Scottish oak tree won the award and is magnificent. We invite you to share the trees near you in the comments section. Photo credits: @bbcnews, @woodlandtrust / Gus Routledge, Hugo Santillan The article is in the first comment.

Amazing visit
We were pleased to welcome First Minister John Swinney and Cabinet Secretary Shona Robison to our Edinburgh Futures Institute this morning. The First Minister held a speech at our newly renovated building, where academics, think tanks, public, private and third sector representatives - as well as our Principal Professor Sir Peter Mathieson - gathered to hear about his case for economic renewal.

Auroras were watched last night in many parts of the UK. Even in Saltillo, Mexico! Do you like Auroras?
The northern lights put on an ethereal display for our Edinburgh-based staff and students last night. 🌃 And it seems that it wasn't only Edinburgh that had a show. Our extraordinary staff have managed to capture shots across Scotland! Did you manage to see the Aurora Borealis last night? If so drop a picture in the comments so we can admire it some more 😍 Locations and photo credits in the comments. #NorthernLights #AuroraBorealis #Edinburgh #NorthernLightsScotland
