It is the eve of COP29. There have been concerns expressed about the location of the 2024 edition and some of the leading personalities organizing this event. In the attached article, I examine some of the issues and conclude that there maybe more potential of positives than negatives about Azerbaijan being the host. Hopefully, in the coming days, the focus will be on the positives. My thoughts are split into 2 parts: + "The dilemma about the Trilemma" argues the case that every region of the planet has its own Energy Trilemma. No common Trilemma means a slow or no Energy Transition. + "Investing in coal-fired power plants is smarter than you think" presents a counter-intuitive case for coal. I believe that this could be a scenario that will allow Asia to achieve formidable economic growth rates and enjoy affordable energy independence in the future without sacrificing long term Sustainability priorities. My thoughts are about simpler, inclusive, affordable and actionable Energy Transition pathways for emerging economies. South Angsi Alpha ‘Rig to Reef’ Initiative Hibiscus Petroleum, in line with our Sustainability Policy, recognises the critical role of preserving biodiversity and protecting ecosystems to maintain ecological balance in its areas of operations. Thus, we collaborated with the Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DoF) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) to launch the South Angsi Alpha (SAA) ‘Rig to Reef’ initiative – converting our decommissioned SAA facilities into an artificial reef at Pulau Tenggol in Dungun, Terengganu. Through this initiative, we aim to leave a positive impact on the environment that will enhance the area’s marine biodiversity and its conservation efforts, whilst promote sustainable fishing and ecotourism. #RigtoReef #OilandGas #Sustainability

We sponsored this year’s prizes for "Pertandingan Robot Tempur" (Battle Robots Competition), an innovative robot competition that combines technology, teamwork, and education! 🤖✨ Organised by the National Science Centre of Malaysia, an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), the competition hopes to inspire the next generation of problem-solvers by providing them with a platform to showcase their robotic creations, each with its own unique feature. This year’s competition was held from 16 – 19 September 2024 at the National Science Centre in Kuala Lumpur and had a turn-out of over 28,000 people. Through collaboration and creativity, participants were engaged in a friendly 4-day competition of showcasing their robots through 1 on 1 battles inside 20 feet by 20 feet combat cage. Now in its 7th year, the competition aims to foster a spirit of innovation and learning, whilst bringing together participants from different backgrounds and varying ages that comprises university students, engineers and fans of robotics. At Hibiscus Petroleum, we believe in giving back to the community and investing in future talents. Supporting initiatives like this aligns with our commitment to promote science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education as well as empower young minds. Hibiscus Petroleum sponsored the 2024 edition of “Kembara Sains Borneo” in Sabah, an annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programme organised by the National Science Centre of Malaysia aimed at educating the youth and local community. Over the span of a month, the programme is expected to benefit 15,000 participants across 9 locations consisting of Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Telupid, Ranau, Kota Belud, Tuaran, Kinarut, Papar and Kota Kinabalu. Bringing along with it a many interactive activities including a mobile science exhibition in a bus, STEM workshops, entertaining shows and much more. Hibiscus Petroleum's personnel also conducted talks on ‘An Introduction to Energy’. The programme was officially launched on 22 July 2024 at Lahad Datu by The Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), YB Dato Mohammad Yusop Apdal, with our Chairman, Zainul Rahim in attendance. The Deputy Minister, together with the Chief Minister of Sabah, and our Country Head of Malaysia & Vietnam, Dr Pascal Hos also did a walkabout of the programme in Tuaran district. Hibiscus completes our Brunei asset acquisition and new country entry Today, we successfully acquired the entire equity interest in TotalEnergies EP (Brunei) B.V., which holds its 37.5% operated interest in Block B Maharajalela Jamalulalam (MLJ) field. Based on calendar year 2024 figures, the MLJ field will boost our 2P Reserves and net production by approximately 36%. This marks the expansion of the Group's geographic footprint into Brunei and solidifies our position as an independent Exploration and Production (E&P) player in the ASEAN region. It also provides a better balance to our asset portfolio as the world transitions to a lower carbon energy mix with higher global demand for natural gas. Hibiscus participated in the 11th Sabah Oil, Gas and Energy Conference and Exhibition (SOGCE) on June 27-28, 2024, in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia. SOGCE serves to promote the state’s oil, gas, and energy industry, bringing together professionals, technologists, industry experts, and policymakers. This platform facilitates networking and discussions, fostering growth and exploration of opportunities within the Sabah region. Our Managing Director, Dr Kenneth Pereira, was a guest speaker on Day 2, taking part in the “In Conversation with Iconoclasts: Energy Transition - Deceptions, Delusions, Realities: Where Are Our Sweet Spots?” session. He presented a balanced view of the energy transition, acknowledging significant challenges while highlighting strategic opportunities for Hibiscus and the broader Malaysian energy sector.
