🎉 We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the 11th edition of RES4Africa’s #ExecutiveSchool! 👷🏾♀️👷🏾♂️   Investing in people is essential for Africa’s energy transition. Building an experienced local workforce and well-prepared managerial talent fosters local ownership, job creation, and a sustainable future. To drive this vision forward, our #ExecutiveSchool provided in-depth training for 40 high-level participants from 16 African countries, each selected and granted a full scholarship. 🌍🌱   This 11th edition, supported by Enel Foundation, Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale, and the European Investment Bank (EIB), was held in partnership with Politecnico di Milano Graduate School of Management and SDA Bocconi School of Management. Over two weeks, from 25th November to 6th December, the participants explored critical topics shaping Africa’s renewable energy landscape, including energy economics, auctions, grid integration, and project finance. The training also featured valuable site visits, including the Nidec Conversion, Prysmian, CESI SpA and ABB Dalmine facilities, offering hands-on insights into power quality, storage, and innovative energy technologies. ⚡️💡   The Executive School was also the occasion for Roberto Vigotti, RES4Africa's Secretary General, to present the new Policy Paper issued by RES4Africa on Scaling up sustainable electrification in Africa and with Africa.   Closing Ceremony Speakers (in order of intervention): -Min. Launch of the EELA Program in ECOWAS: Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa 🌍 The Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa (EELA) program was officially launched in the ECOWAS region, marking an important step toward advancing energy efficiency and sustainable industrial development across Africa. The event took place on 28 November 2024 at ESEF in Abidjan and brought together Honorable Ministers, representatives of regional and national institutions, partners, and stakeholders to discuss the role of energy efficiency in achieving development goals, enhancing industrial competitiveness, and addressing climate challenges. The launch of EELA in ECOWAS represents an important step in fostering regional cooperation while supporting national action. UNIDO, together with its partners, remains committed to advancing energy efficiency to meet Africa’s industrialization goals and global climate targets. 👏 Exciting news on #EnergyEfficiency in #Africa. Today, the African Ministers in charge of Transport and Energy, in the Third Extraordinary Session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Transport and Energy (STC-T&E), approved the African Energy Efficiency Strategy, Roadmap, and Action Plan (AfEES). 🚀In the Strategy, Africa commits to achieving a 50% increase of its energy productivity by 2050 and a 70% increase by 2063 to ensure the long-term decoupling of economic growth from energy consumption, fostering energy-efficient and resilient economies and realizing universal access to modern, reliable and affordable energy in support of the Agenda 2063 goals. 🚀 This is to be realized through adoption of energy efficiency paradigms across all sectors of the economy, by fostering an enabling environment that facilitates trade and investment, and the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and practices. 🚀AfEES outlines actions for enhancing energy efficiency across all sectors of the economy including power, transport, industry, buildings, agriculture and appliances. The Strategy is a great milestone as shall guide the activities under the African Energy Efficiency Programme AfEES development was led by the African Energy Commission of the African Union (funded by the European Commission) in consultation with the African Union Member States, ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Efficiency (EACREEE), SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE), Southern African Power Pool, Power Pools among other stakeholders. We are looking forward to hosting a four (4) day hybrid workshop in #Abidjan #Coted’Ivoire from 10th – 13th  December 2024 to help develop a comprehensive framework that enables cross-border cooperation for skills sharing in the #African Energy sector. This sector continues to face #CapacityBuilding challenges due to varying levels of expertise, resources, and governance structures across different countries.  It is undeniable that cross-border knowledge sharing, and #StrategicCooperation are essential to address these disparities. A framework for cooperation in skills sharing should facilitate the exchange of expertise, #bestpractices, and innovations in the #AfricanEnergySector. The workshop brings together continental, regional, and national partners like the African Development Bank Group, African Union Commission, African Union Development Agency-NEPAD, African Forum for Utility Regulators, #APUA, #AFCSEC, and Sida . Also participating are #RegionalEconomicCommunities #RECs, #SADCSADCSADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE), #CentresforRenewableEnergyAndEnergyEfficiency #PowerPools, #RegionalRegulatoryAuthoritiesAndAssociations, relevant ministries, energy centres, and accreditation bodies. As #AFREC we are seeking to build on existing cooperation initiatives, introduce new strategies for skills sharing, and formalise partnerships that will ensure long-term, sustainable collaboration. The second part of the workshop will involve a review and validation of the #AfricanEnergyTransitionStrategyAndActionPlan #ETSAP, which has been developed as part of the #AfricaEnergyTransitionProgramme #AFRETRAP that embodies the African Union’s vision for a low-carbon energy future. Southern African Solar Thermal Training & Demonstration Initiative (SOLTRAIN), Ignites Passion for Renewable Energy at National University of Science and Technology, NUST Career Fair 2024! From November 25-29, 2024, the National University of Science and Technology, NUST Career Fair became a hub of inspiration and innovation as students from schools such as Tsholotsho High, Sandringham High and Matopo High gathered to explore opportunities in STEM. The Southern African Solar Thermal Training & Demonstration Initiative (SOLTRAIN) mobile trailer stole the spotlight, showcasing cutting-edge solar thermal technologies and demonstrating their transformative potential. Some of the notable interactions include the following; Interactive Demonstrations: Attendees were captivated by live demonstrations of solar heating systems, energy management tools, and sustainable lighting solutions, sparking curiosity about clean energy's role in addressing energy challenges. Youth Engagement: Students engaged deeply, asking insightful questions about the technology's efficiency, mechanisms, and impact, with many expressing aspirations to join National University of Science and Technology, NUST to pursue careers in STEM and renewable energy. Empowering Girls In STEM Trust: A significant focus was placed on encouraging girls to explore STEM careers. The remarkable turnout of young women highlighted the event’s success in inspiring the next generation of female leaders in technology and engineering. Broader Impact: School headmasters and educators showed strong interest in adopting solar technologies, with discussions paving the way for potential installations in schools like Matopo High, already a beneficiary of Southern African Solar Thermal Training & Demonstration Initiative (SOLTRAIN)’s solar thermal geyser initiative. A collaborative success led by the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, including Prof. Eng. Samson Mhlanga, Eng. Gilbert Munhuwamambo, Eng. Albert Nkulumo Mnkandla, Eng. Destine Mashava, and Eng. Kudakwashe Nigel Chinguwo, the SOLTRAIN team showcased the transformative power of renewable energy.
