We are proud to announce the successful execution of our recent Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, in which we provided meals to 1,000 underserved school children in low-income communities across Lagos, Nigeria. This is in collaboration with the Lagos Food Bank Initiative (LFBI). Through this programme, we addressed the critical issue of child hunger and malnutrition, directly contributing to relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. This effort aligns with our core values of compassion, responsibility, and community support, as well as our long-term commitment to supporting Nigeria’s next generation. According to one of our founding partners, Theophilus Emuwa, during the outreach, “We believe that our role extends beyond providing exceptional services to our clients; we have a responsibility to give back to the society that supports us, and feeding 1,000 school children is just one of the ways we are actively working to address social challenges and support the fourth SDG, Quality Education”. As a leader in our industry, we understand the importance of using our resources and influence to support sustainable solutions that address critical issues facing our communities. We extend our sincere gratitude to our partners, especially the Lagos Food Bank Initiative (LFBI) for collaborating with us on this initiative. Together, we have taken an important step towards creating a brighter and healthier future for the next generation. #AELEX #WithlovefromAELEX #SDGs #CSR #LFBI #EDUFOOD #CommunityImpact #Zerohunger #Education #Nopoverty

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the 12th edition of PLEASe, a transformative event organised by Slaughter and May bringing together legal professionals and business leaders from across Africa and beyond. Held in vibrant Nairobi, the symposium explored critical topics shaping our industry, including navigating regulatory complexities, fostering sustainable investment, and leveraging technology in African markets. Particularly inspiring were the discussions on innovative business development, building strong law firm cultures, strategic responses to global disruptions, sustainability transitions, ESG litigation trends, and promoting wellbeing within the legal profession. These sessions sparked thought-provoking conversations about the future of African businesses and legal practice. Beyond the sessions, the organizers ensured we experienced Nairobi's charm with memorable activities like wine tasting and dinner at Cultiva Farm, a heartwarming visit to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to meet orphaned elephants, and an excursion to the breathtaking Nairobi National Park. I’m deeply thankful to the esteemed speakers for sharing their expertise and to AELEX for enabling me to be part of this extraordinary journey. A special shoutout to the incredible connections I made along the way Esraa Abdelmoniem, Ozita Rosa-Hotentote, Chisom Ndubuisi, Azeezah Muse-Sadiq, Luís Arouca, Laeticia Tiecoura, Edward Luke II FCIArb,FAArb, your insights and camaraderie were invaluable. In this article, our International Trade Practice Group (ITPG) explores the transformative potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the world’s largest free trade market, and its implications for sustainable development across the continent.  With AfCFTA projected to boost intra-African trade by over 50% and expand Africa’s economy to $29 trillion by 2050, the Agreement is poised to revolutionise markets and economies. However, this growth raises environmental challenges. Increased economic activity could heighten Africa’s carbon footprint, especially in transportation, manufacturing, and agriculture. While Africa currently has a low contribution to global emissions, the continent is highly vulnerable to climate impacts. This article examines how AfCFTA’s implementation can balance economic growth with environmental protection, offering strategic insights for integrating sustainability into AfCFTA’s frameworks. Drawing lessons from the World Trade Organization, we advocate for trade practices that both promote economic development and safeguard Africa’s ecosystems. In the last week of September, I had the privilege of joining Google’s legal partners across Sub-Saharan Africa for the annual Google SSA Legal Hub bootcamp in Nigeria. The 3-day event brought together legal experts to exchange insights on evolving legal trends and developments in our respective jurisdictions. I was honored to speak as a panelist, addressing the critical issue of regulatory overreach and how stakeholders can collaborate to manage it effectively. But it wasn’t all business! There was plenty of time to unwind and connect with colleagues. A fun highlight for me was the "Guess the Law Firm Fun Fact" game—in which I won a fantastic prize. 😊 It was an incredible time spent with the Google team and colleagues from across the region. Until next year, aloha Google SSA Legal Hub bootcamp!
